Verdict: A fun mindless entertainer full of wildly funny characters.
In Bollywood, comedy usually means mindless entertainment. While some audiences look down upon this brand of slapstick humor, most love it, even if they don’t admit to it. After dealing with the stress of work and other pressures, most moviegoers simply like to leave their brains at home and enjoy some gentle comedy that does not require you to think too much or question anything. How else would you explain the success of movie franchises like Housefull, Welcome, Dhamaal, Golmaal, or Singh is Kinng? So if any of these movies are your guilty pleasures too, Anees Bazmee’s Pagalpanti is definitely for you.
What’s Pagalpanti About:
Pagalpanti takes us on a crazy adventure with Raj Kishore (John Abraham), Chandu (Pulkit Samrat), and Junky (Arshad Warsi). After amassing lots of debt due to his ill fortune, Raj and his friends start working for gangsters Wifi (Anil Kapoor) and his brother-in-law Raja (Saurabh Shukla), which takes them to London. Even in the new city, their misfortunes follow them and they manage to bring about further losses to the deadly duo. Meanwhile, the gangsters themselves are on the hitlist of other underlords but their rivals’ plans to kill the funny gangster pair lead to many chaotic situations.
With a large cast of many funny actors, it’s hard to focus on only one character. John Abraham definitely takes the lead here and uses his caricatural asinine persona to create an innocently charismatic impression. Pulkit Samrat seems to be doing the same but adds a boyish charm to his character. The best lines are saved for Arshad Warsi, who delivers them perfectly to bring out the most laughs. Anil Kapoor brings back his inner Majnu Bhai (Welcome) and pulls it off flawlessly alongside Saurabh Shukla who complements him just as hilariously. Kriti Kharbanda and Ileana D’Cruz play the love interests and Urvashi Rautela stuns with her dance number.
Anees Bazmee has tried every trick in the Bollywood comedy rulebook to make Pagalpanti work. There are lots of funny characters played by star actors and some of the biggest names in comedy. The script is full of hilarious gags that the actors have done fair justice to. There’s action aplenty to appease the average moviegoer. The movie has been shot in picturesque London for added effect. There’s also patriotic sub-plot which is the latest flavor of Bollywood movies. The music is peppy and tempts you to shake a leg. All these factors together make Pagalpanti a fun watch.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The various situations in the film don’t seem connected and there’s little depth in the story or the characters; it’s just a random assemblage of gags. The added supernatural and patriotic sub-plots don’t add much to the film.
Why You Should Watch:
Pagalpanti can be enjoyed solo, with a group of friends, or with family. It’s a movie for all kinds of occasions and only cares to make you forget about your worries and laugh out loud.
