Race 2: Movie Review

Review: Sexy cars, glamorous women, beefy & muscular men, exotic locals, slick camera work, racy chase sequences. Heard of that before? Yes, that’s trademark Abbas-Mustan. Can’t blame them for using the same formula again and again. It works. The audience is hooting and whistling each time the hero walks in stylishly with the signature score playing in the background. As for the story, who cares? Same old, same old. Revenge, betrayal, survival etc. Twists, deadly turns, double crossing characters, triple crossing characters. Nothing you haven’t seen in the original Race. But don’t tell me you actually walk into an Abbas-Mustan film expecting an original story. If you do, then you need to take a class or two on Bollywood cinema.

Such films are meant to be enjoyed on face value. Sit back, relax, enjoy the nach gana and enjoy the glamour. Hoot along when you hear the audience scream as Deepika stylishly arrives in a helicopter or as Saif walks out of the beach in shorts (Daniel Craig, 007 style). Disclaimer: Make sure you leave the logical part of your brain at home before you come to watch Race 2.

The race continues with Anil Kapoor introducing our hot new characters. Armaan Malik (beefcake Johnny boy) – the corrupt tycoon who started his criminal career as a street fighter. Arman’s sinister sister Elena (deadly Deepika), his partner in crime. Omisha (Jacqueline Fernandez, foxy thief), Arman’s girlfriend. Of course, the purana paapi – inspector RD (fruit lover Anil Kapoor) and his fruity assistant Cherry (Ameesha Patel). Then the man himself – Ranvir Singh (he gets the most whistles, still hot in his 40s – Saif). Ranvir has a score to settle with Armaan, his brain hatches a scheme with the help of old friend RD. Armaan’s sister Elena falls for him. But is this part of Armaan’s plan because he knows about Ranvir’s intentions? With each character double crossing each other every 20 minutes, your left second guessing yourself each time you think you know what’s happening. So don’t bother. Despite so many twists and turns, it’s still a surprisingly slow and lengthy film. But it’s still fun to watch.

Performance-wise, wait hold that thought, there isn’t any performance here. Style and looks wise, surprisingly, Jacqueline Fernandez outshines Deepika. The girl looks stunning. Ameesha plays the bimbette to perfection. Sorry John, Saif is a far better actor. Hence, even when there is no acting involved, he manages to do more than just flex his muscles and scream loudly.

If you like the original Race, you will definitely like this one as well. The hit director duo take it a notch higher with this one in terms of locals, star cast and production value. Over all, a fun film if you love your weekly dose of Bollywood glitz, glamour and action.

Verdict: Action- packed, slick, sexy and glamorous. Perfect for Abbas- Mustan fans.
