Shamitabh: Film Review – The power lies in the voice!

Scotch main. Paani woh. Hai koi paani jo chadti hai whisky ke bina? – questions Mr. Bachchan in his baritone voice, thus declaring his magnetism in the film. And if you are thinking he is the protagonist of Shamitabh then you are wrong, it’s actually his voice! Yes, the film is possibly director R. Balki’s tribute to the megastar’s sonorous tone.

After delivering blockbuster films like Paa and Cheeni Kum, Balki is back with yet another twisted and refreshing story. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush and introducing Akshara Haasan, the movie will entertain you with its unique plot, sharp-witted dialogues and well-etched characters.

The film begins with stream of cameos by the who’s who of Bollywood. And then comes in the star, Danish/Shamitabh (Dhanush), a young man, who despite being mute relocates to Mumbai to become an actor. Dhanush effortlessly slips into the character of Danish. His various antics will definitely bring a smile on your face. Moreover, his transformation from a gullible young man to an ego-stricken Shamitabh is flawless! Mr. Bachchan as Amitabh Sinha delivers yet another brilliant performance of his career. With unkempt hair, churlish attitude and whisky in his hand, the megastar’s portrayal is class apart!

However, the film entirely belongs to Shamitabh that is Dhanush and Amitabh together! One can simply feel something missing when these two actors have individual scenes. The chemistry between them is brilliant and one of the main highlights of the film. Moreover, even Akshara gives a commendable performance. Her level of confidence is definitely worth an applause considering it’s her debut film.

Overall, the film is entertaining and filled with witty one-liners. The first half of the film may come across as slow, but the interesting second half and a surprising ending sort of makes up for it. Music composer Illaiyaraja’s renditions are hummable. P.S – Watch out for the song Piddly Si Baatein, it will definitely get you in splits!

Why should you watch this film?
Shamitabh is another stellar piece coming from Balki’s kitty. With a scintillating story, brilliant dialogues and power-packed performances by an adept cast, Shamitabh is definitely worth a watch this weekend. Plus, with Rekha making a cameo in the film, it will definitely bring back some memories for the Amitabh-Rekha fans. So don’t miss this one!
