Ungli: Film Review – A riveting comedy and a brave attempt!

Ungli is an engaging movie revolving around a gang of friends and how they astutely deal with corrupt officials in Mumbai.

A group of four friends – Abhay, Kaleem, Maya and Koti – are determined to provide justice to the common people in their own twisted way. They pledge to remain anonymous by uploading videos of their antics while slipping away in ski-masks. While the cops and media are perturbed by this ‘Ungli Gang’ and their resolution to take the law into their own hands, the ‘aam janta’ start to admire their work.

Emraan Hashmi plays the role of Nikhil – a notorious cop who is always wavering. His father was a dedicated and diligent police officer, but Nikhil doesn’t quite take after him. Sanjay Dutt plays the role of Inspector Kale and happens to be a close friend of Nikhil’s father. Naturally, after Nikhil’s father passes away, Kale turns into a father figure for him. Inspector Kale is approached by a senior police official to track down the ‘Ungli Gang’. Kale decides to rope in Nikhil in a plan to nab the gang.

The ways in which the Ungli Gang and Nikhil tackle corruption in Mumbai are hilarious and unendlessly relatable, mainly because they come across victims of daily injustice. These include situations like rickshaw-walas refusing fares, government officials delaying your pension or RTO officers doling out licenses to everyone and their mothers. While this gang is helping the public fight against the oppression, they end up being the victims of social injustice.

The entire cast has done an impeccable job, especially Sanjay Dutt, who is brilliant as Inspector Kale. The song ‘Dance Basanti’ seems unnecessary in the movie, but one cannot complain as it’s impossible to take your eyes off Shraddha Kapoor. She moves so effortlessly, that you will look forward to ABCD 2!

Why you should watch this film?

Ungli reveals how corruption is rampant throughout the city and can be found at every level of government. In case you haven’t guessed already, the title of the movie is a big "middle finger" to the fraudulent system. If you have ever been pushed around by government officials or have been asked to pay a bribe, don’t miss Ungli! This movie will make you laugh right till the end! And if you have been living under a rock and haven’t had such an encounter, then it’s safe to say you can simply watch it for Shraddha Kapoor.
