Yaariyan: Film Review

It wasn’t very surprising to see a bunch of college kids outside the theater bubbling with excitement for the teen-flick Yaariyan. Debutante director Divya Khosla Kumar’s, Yaariyan which releases today is all about first love, first kiss, first winning moment and a lot of hormonal imbalances. College days… does it ring a bell? When it comes to Bollywood, college life is all flamboyant. No one is attending classes, teachers are mostly ignored for their mostly unacceptable ways of functioning, and all the girls are dressed for a clubbing night showcasing ample amount of cleavage and legs. Unlike the college you may have attended, of course!

Yaariyan is no different. The plot revolves around five close friends. And when there is a college with students running wild, something sinister is always lurking around. Here it comes in the form of an evil Australian business tycoon. His motive is to seize the land between the girls hostel and the football ground to build a luxurious hotel with a casino. Yes, it is a very out-of-the-blue situation. So what does the principal decide? A competition of course!  Isn’t it very obvious after all the college-related movies that we have watched since the days of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.

Five students are selected to compete against the Australian team. Newcomer Himansh Kohli as Lakshya does a pretty good job as a bad boy-turned-good. Rakul Preet Singh as Saloni was almost invisible in the whole movie. Besides smiling and prancing around Lakshya, her winning moment was when she got a kiss from Lakshya infront of the whole college in her swayamvar,Saloni Ka Kiss‘. Deepti Naval and Smita Jaykar are the over-sentimental Indian mothers who can shed tears at every possible moment. Gulshan Grover as the stern principal, Jim Martin does an impressive job even though he doesn’t have much to do. The rest of the cast is as good as ignored.

The music composed by Pritam with a special track ABCD by Honey Singh sets on the party mood. The title track, Baarish is as syrupy as the movie.

With some comic puns and the same old square plot, Yaariyan is a movie which delivers nothing new. When going for this movie don’t expect anything, just sit back and enjoy the pure melodrama.
