Ayyappanum Koshiyum: Film Review – Man Versus Wild

Verdict: The movie deals with the male ego and the rivalry between the two men is an exciting watch.

Ayyappanum Koshiyum has been written and directed by Sachy and revolves around an ex-army veteran and a Sub Inspector of Police. The film has been bankrolled by Ranjith and PM Sasidharan under the banner Gold Coin Motion Picture Company. It features Prithviraj Sukumaran and Biju Menon in lead roles and Ranjith, Anil Nedumangad, Anu Mohan, Gowri Nandha, Anna Reshma Rajan and Sabumon Abdusamad in supporting roles, among many others. Jakes Bejoy has composed the music, Ranjan Abraham has taken care of the editing and Sudeep Elamon has handled the cinematography.

What’s Ayyappanum Koshiyum about:

The story revolves around Ayyappan Nair (Biju Menon), the SI of Police in Attappadi station and Koshi Kurien (Prithviraj Sukumaran) an ex-army veteran from Kattapana. One night, the police team led by Ayyappan catches Koshi with a dozen bottles of alcohol in the alcohol prohibited area of Attappadi. Koshi, who hails from a powerful background backed by his rich and influential father Kurien John (Ranjith), is locked up and spends a few days in the sub-jail. His ego is deeply hurt and he wants to avenge his insult by Ayyappan, and as does his father. Fortunately for Koshi, he has enough evidence against Ayyappan which could destroy almost three decades of his career. Eventually, the grey shades of both men are out and it turns into a man-versus-wild game.

What Works:

Both the lead actors Biju and Prithviraj have delivered power-packed performances. In fact, Ayyappan could be considered as one of the best performances by Biju Menon. Anil Nedumangad gets a meaty role and has clearly done a great job. Ranjith is good too, as the cold-blooded, influential Kurien John. The two women Gowri and Anna – they represent the two extremes of what women can be – one fiery and another helpless. They both have done justice to their respective roles. Ayyappanum Koshiyum is a movie that breaks all the cliches of a regular mass hero action film. Koshi definitely has the shades of the regular hero we are familiar with, we get to see him from a different perspective altogether. In this movie, you cannot define the hero or the anti-hero clearly because both showcase their grey side. Sudeep Elamon has captured the beauty of Attappadi excellently. Jakes Bejoy’s background music is powerful and the songs are refreshing with a tribal and wild touch. The action sequences are thrilling. Sachy has cleverly covered many rights and wrongs that happen in our society subtlely without making it look controversial. Overall, Ayyappanum Koshiyum is a great watch.

What Could’ve Been Better:

The movie is almost three hours long and while most of it is entertaining, it could be a let down for some viewers. The climax is predictable. Apart from that, Ayyappanum Koshiyum is a thrilling experience.
