Madhuraraja: Film Review – Raja Is Back With A Bang!

Verdict: Mammootty makes a splash with this out-and-out mass entertainer.

With the giants of Malayalam cinema delivering super hits one week after the other, this Vishu could not have been any better for the Malayalam cinema fans. Mammootty proves his versatility yet again with Madhuraraja. Director Vysakh pays a tribute to his 2010 hit, Pokkiri Raja with Mammootty reprising his role as the dynamic Raja. The movie has been scripted by Udayakrishnan and has a stellar cast in numerous minor roles. While familiar names from the Pokkiri Raja like Nedumudi Venu and Salim Kumar are spotted, the movie gets a fresh appeal with the pivotal characters essayed by Jai, Anusree, Jagapati Babu and Aju Varghese. While Gopi Sundar has worked on the music, Shaji Kumar has wielded the camera for Madhuraraja.

What’s Madhuraraja About:

A small hamlet near Vypeen, Kochi is under the clutches of the hooch baron Nadesan (Jagapati Babu). When Madhavan master (Nedumudi Venu) and Krishnan (Vijaya Raghavan) come to investigate the state of affairs, they are forced to back off by Nadesan. Raja’s (Mammootty) sidekick Chinna Raja (Jai) is sent to help but lands himself in trouble with the local goons. Then it is up to Raja to untangle the web of troubles cast by Nadesan and rescue the people from the evil mastermind.

What Works:

Madhuraraja is true to its trailer – it’s a thorough entertainer, with Mammootty at the helm delivering one of his better performances till date. The film has power-packed performances peppered with action, comedy and drama. The first half is well-scripted with sensible humor and even smarter repartee by Salim Kumar. The second half focuses more on action and is well put together by Peter Hein. Though the storyline may seem like tried-and-tested one, there is not a dull moment in the movie. Jai marks his debut in the Malayalam film industry with Madhuraraja. Anusree delivers a powerful performance as the no-nonsense responsible sibling to Mahima Nambiar. Jagapati Babu plays the devil with elan. While the makers have insisted that Madhuraraja is not a sequel, ample references have been made to Pokkiri Raja. Some scenes in the climax seem to have a Pulimurugan touch as well. The VFX have been put together well throughout the flick. The background music for Raja’s entry sets the mood of the movie. One must say, that the much-awaited Sunny Leone item number will find its way to playlists.

What Could’ve Been Better:

While the high-flying stunts can be applauded, the violence in the movie could have been turned down a notch. A certain torture method is used by the villain a bit too many times, which may leave the audience spent.

Why You Should Watch:

What better reason to watch the movie than Mammootty as the swash-buckling Raja? Even if you are not a Mammootty fan, you will not be disappointed as the movie has ample comedy and action to everyone’s liking. So go ahead, book yourself a seat for this complete entertainer.
