Njan Steve Lopez

Njan Steve Lopez: Film Review – Simple story, bold theme

A brilliant start, an intriguing storyline and an engrossing climax. These elements together make for a conventional entertainer. But what happens when this tradition is not followed? What happens if instead of a colorful movie, the audience gets to watch a day-to-day life of a man? The result – a realistic venture known as Njan Steve Lopez.

National award winner, cinematographer-turned-director, Rajeev Ravi had offered a brilliant movie, Annayum Rasoolum in 2013. Set in Cochin, it revolved around the love story of a Muslim taxi driver, Rasool (Fahadh Faasil) and a Christian girl, Anna (Andrea Jeremiah). This year, the director is back to engross the Mollywood audience with the story of Steve Lopez (Farhaan Faasil).

Njan Steve Lopez narrates the story of Steve, a young college-going student. All that matters in his life are his friends, social media addiction, booze and Anjali, his childhood friend-turned-sweetheart. Life was sailing smooth for Steve, until one day he witnesses an incident. This was the turning point in his life. Will Steve’s life remain unaffected as it was? Or will the incident cause turbulence and change the course of Steve’s life?

Talking about the performance, Farhaan Faasil makes his debut in filmdom with Njan Steve Lopez. Like his elder brother, Fahadh, Farhaan too proves his acting mettle. His performance adds a depth to his character in different phases, throughout the movie. He seems cherry-picked for the character of Lopez. A youth of his age has a mix of innocence, anger, frustration and much more. Farhaan as Lopez expresses the emotions according to the situations without going overboard. Ahaana Krishna was brilliant onscreen as Anjali, as the loving yet demanding girlfriend. The rest of the cast included Alancier, Sujith Shankar, Mini K S, Anil Nedumangad and Vinayakan. Their performance was like a natural presentation than just acting.

On the technical note, the movie was a sheer brilliance. Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram, was brought to life on the silver screen. All thanks to cinematographer, Pappu. Chandran Veyattummal‘s background score adds a realistic feel to the plotline. The song ‘Theruvakal‘ is a melodious romantic number. Apart from this track, the rest of the songs by Shahabaz Aman were just about average. Director Rajeev Ravi offers yet another creative craft to the audience with Njan Steve Lopez.

The script is combinedly penned by Rajesh Ravi, Santhosh Echikkanam, Geethu Mohandas who stretched the movie to a certain extent. The theme was too crisp for a 116-minute long film. Though it was meant to be a different film, the consistent lag doesn’t make Njan Steve Lopez a regular Mollywood flick.

But overall, Njan Steve Lopez offers a unique and different movie experience to the Malayalam movie fans.

Why should you watch this film?

Njan Steve Lopez is a strict no-no for all the movie buffs who prefer the usual entertainers. But if you are a fan of unconventional movies, then Njan Steve Lopez is our recommended watch for this weekend.
