Verdict: Virus is based on real-life events and keeps you hooked till the end.
Ashiq Abu directorial Virus produced under the banner OPM Cinemas by Ashiq Abu himself and wife Rima Kallingal is based on the 2018 Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode. Written by Muhsin Parari, Sharfu and Suhas, the film features a stellar cast comprising of Kunchako Boban, Parvathy Thiruvoth, Poornima Indrajith, Revathy, Tovino Thomas, Poornima Indrajith, Indrajith, Rima Kallingal and Sreenath Bhasi in pivotal roles.
What’s Virus About:
Akhila (Rima Kallingal), a nurse, has been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit due high fever and vomiting. It is suspected that a certain virus has entered her body from Zakariya who she treated and the same symptoms were prevalent in some other patients as well. It is discovered that this virus is Nipah, a dangerous virus which doesn’t have a vaccine or treatment. A medical cell is formed under the guidance of the Kozhikode District Collector Paul Abraham (Tovino Thomas), Health Director (Poornima Indrajith) and Health Minister (Revathy). Many others, including the doctors Suresh Rajan (Kunchako Boban) and Annu (Parvathy Thiruvoth), become part of the cell. They work relentlessly toward managing the virus, reducing the death toll and finding the source of the Nipah outbreak. Virus portrays brave decision making and execution by commoners, health care professionals, and authorities along with tackling collective paranoia among everyone.
The pace of the film is slow as the story demands and involves many brilliant performances. All the lead actors have equal screen time and the acting cannot be better! Even the actors like Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothen and Rima Kallingal who have very little screen time have done a fab job. None of them seem to be “acting”, but living through the viral outbreak. Rajeev Ravi and Shyju Khalid’s cinematography is par excellence, as is Saiju Sreedharan’s editing. Sushin Shyam’s background score can be considered another character in the movie. It helps in keeping you hooked throughout the film. Muhsin Parari, Sharfu, and Suhas have written the script very well, and there are certain dialogues that are perfectly apt for the scenario. Director Ashiq Abu has made a technically brilliant film with amazing performances.
What Could’ve Been Better:
To be honest, the movie is too good, you fail to figure whether you are watching a movie or living it. The slow pace and absence of songs and other masala elements might disappoint some.
Why You Should Watch:
