Verdict: Nude passes with flying colors and will definitely leave you awestruck.
A very famous artist said, "creativity requires courage" and it stands true to every word. It isn’t easy being an artist and having an eye for detail. However, what the world isn’t aware of is how difficult it is being art muses and models. Nude is a powerful story of a woman who begins posing for art students to earn a living. What are the experiences of these models? Do their families accept them when they find out? What is the relationship of these models with the art students? And lastly, do they ever get used to it? These are some of the questions Ravi Jadhav has answered with Nude; a movie that has won critical acclaims and is now winning hearts.
WHAT’S NUDE ABOUT:
Nude traces the story of two women, Yamuna (Kalyanee Mulay) and her aunt Chandra (Chhaya Kadam) who earn living by posing as nude models for art students. Yamuna leaves her abusive husband and comes to Mumbai to earn money that can help her pay for her son’s education. Yamuna is utterly shocked and disgusted when she finds out that her aunt, Chandra works as a nude model for art students. Yamuna’s aunt condemns her thinking and explains to her that the art students see them as subjects that can be studied and not objects of lust. After thorough convincing, Yamuna agrees to do same for the sake of her son. She then embarks on a journey that changes her, empowers her and teaches her to stand independently.
Kalyanee Mulay and Chhaya Kadam are the stars that shine brightly throughout the movie. Yamuna’s transformation from a naive and innocent woman to someone who is strong and proud of her profession is portrayed phenomenally by Kalyanee Mulay. Om Bhutkar and Madan Deodhar play their parts with utmost conviction. The movie presents the haunting truth of the profession but in a very subtle way. As audiences, you will be in awe of these models and feel nothing but respect for them. Naseeruddin Shah’s extended cameo as a renowned artist makes the movie all the more impactful. The makers have tried to keep the encounter between Naseeruddin Shah and the protagonist entertaining yet insightful. It is Naseeruddin Shah who gives away the strongest message of the movie.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:
Naseeruddin Shah has a different aura every time he comes on screen and his cameo kept the audience wanting for more. Most of the times the audiences expect happy endings. However, the makers have tried to end the movie as realistically as possible. Trust us when we say this, it works in the movie's favor.
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH THE FILM:
Nude is powerful and expressive yet so raw and vulnerable at all the right places. The message "the essence of nude paintings is to capture the soul, not the body" has been conveyed beautifully. Nude will amaze you and bring about a change in the way you perceive the world. Don’t miss this brilliant, heart-wrenching drama.
