Verdict: Yet another superior film by Simerjit Singh.

Subedar Joginder Singh is a special film because of multiple aspects. Firstly, Gippy Grewal comes back to the big screen after 2017’s biggest hit, Manje Bistre. Secondly, the movie is directed by one of the most respected directors of the Punjabi film industry, Simerjit Singh. Moreover, the movie has an offbeat theme, the Indo-China war, which has been experimented just once before in Punjabi cinema – Sajjan Singh Rangroot. There’s enough hype surrounding the movie. Does the supremely talented team of Subedar Joginder Singh succeed in bringing us quality cinema? The answer is a big yes.

What’s Subedar Joginder Singh About:

Set against the backdrop of Indo-China war, Subedar Joginder Singh is India’s first ever biopic based on the life of Param Vir Chakra awardee Subedar Joginder Singh. It chronicles his journey from being a soldier in the British Indian Army to serving in the Indo-China war and becoming a war hero.

What Works:

Subedar Joginder Singh begins on a high with the introduction of the protagonists in the film. The varied shades of each character intrigue the viewers. The constant taunting and joking between the soldiers entertain and bring in a few laughs. The love story of Gippy-Aditi is cute and charms the viewers. The second half is where the action begins. Right after the Chinese troops attack the Indian camp, viewers are hooked to the edge of their seats.

There are a number of moments that offer a sense of pride to every Sikh and every Indian for that matter. The bravery and valor that Gippy's character, Subedar Joginder Singh, and his platoon display on the screen make you applaud for the soldiers who had actually fought the battle. The final reels are touching and the viewers are left moist-eyed.

Gippy Grewal puts life into the character of Subedar Joginder Singh. Enacting the role of a legend requires great responsibility and Gippy manages to do complete justice to it. He displays great maturity on screen and would surely walk away with applauds and laurels. Aditi Sharma makes her presence felt. Kulwinder Billa, who makes his debut in Pollywood with this one, is entertaining and confident. Karamjit Anmol gets all the witty one-liners perfect.

Subedar Joginder Singh review - BookMyShow

Simerjit Singh yet again manages to deliver superior cinema. After Angrej and Nikka Zaildar series, Subedar Joginder Singh is yet another feather in the cap for the talented director. He gets out of his comfort zone and yet manages to woo the audience. The music (Jaidev Kumar, Jassi Katyal, Gurmeet Singh) is in sync with the mood of the film.

What Could Have Been Better:

The movie’s first half seems to drag a little bit. A tighter editing and deletion of a few unimportant scenes would’ve only enhanced the overall impact of the film. The audience would've definitely loved to see more of Roshan Prince and Harish Verma

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Subedar Joginder Singh should be watched by every citizen of India. It wonderfully showcases the kind of struggle, sacrifice, and bravery of the soldiers of the Indian Army and their families. Everyone should know the valor of Indian soldiers guarding our war fronts. The movie brings a sense of national pride in us and only raises our respect for the Indian Army manifold.
