Chirpy, fun and hilarious – romantic-comedies are always feel-good films. But how about the ones that use stalking and male-chauvinism? Do they qualify to be in this genre? Maybe yes, but concepts like these should have been made at least 10 years ago. Thankfully, director Karthik G. Krish’s Kappal doesn’t use this as the plot of the movie. Instead, he uses originality to promise the audience that there is more to the film.
Kappal rides on a wafer-thin plot. It starts off with some stereotype dialogues, uninteresting comic scenes, a weak screenplay; making the film seem dreadfully longer than it already is. ‘How to win a girl in 3 days’, ‘How to stalk girls’ and ‘How to have flings’ – the film’s premises teaches you all the wrong things about life and love. But the same can’t be said about the second-half. The film stays faithful to its genre and provides plenty of gags, owing to its original sequences. The ‘pachai varthai’ scene, is truly enjoyable! Although predictable, the tattoo-scene starring VTV Ganesh, will make you laugh! The camera angles at certain points seem strange, especially the low angle shot of the men in ‘short’ shorts, which makes you squirm.
Vaibhav makes his presence felt by mouthing fillers! ‘Uh’, ‘ah’ and ‘um’ are the most you could hear from this actor. Sonam, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Samantha, (you’ll find out after you watch the film), is seen in mostly tight-fitting spaghetties and short dresses. A slightly more relatable sense of styling could’ve helped her characterization. The lines written for her are definitely a plus – they aren’t silly or ‘cute and bubbly’ but seem a little practical. The characterization of her father is also a plus. But the actor who gave a stellar performance was Abhay. Playing the role of a joker, a scapegoat, Abhay is undoubtedly one of the best parts about this movie.
Why should you watch this film?
Kappal may not rise against the tides like a mighty ship, but it will definitely make you laugh. Watch while you munch on some popcorn and have a good time at the cinemas!
