Verdict: Constant revelations keep you hooked to the Kolaigaran.
After debuting a talented directorial in the romantic genre through Leelei, Andrew Louis has tried his luck in Kolaigaran with a murder mystery that is already a hit. Backed with unmatched writing by Louis, the movie has been produced by Pradeep, with Chennai as the setting. A slight touch of Indo-western music and Tamil melody by Simon KS fill the audiences’ souls with calm. The lead actors Vijay Antony, Arjun Sarja and Ashima Narwal are supported by superb artists like Seetha and Nassar, making Kolaigaran legendary.
What’s Kolaigaran About:
Kolaigaran is the story of a manhunt for a murderer. This two-hour story blooms with an ambiguous scene where a woman is murdered by an anonymous person. It instantly shifts to the scene where we are introduced to Prabhakaran (Vijay Antony), his neighbor Dharani (Ashima Narwal) and her mother Lakshmi (Seetha). One fine morning, Dharani is out shopping and she bumps into a guy who has been torturing her since years. In the next few shots, we see a murder has taken place and with the body disfigured, the police are left clueless about the identity of the victim as well as the murderer. Inspector Karthikeyan (Arjun Sarja) leads the investigation with his smart tactics. Kolaigaran has got twists and turns that anyone could find difficult to solve. Karthikeyan is held into these tangled strings where he believes that the killer is Prabhakaran but the plot has new revelations that stream the direction of the murder mystery elsewhere and take the film to an interesting climax.
The movie is defined by its sound effects, dark theme, screenplay, characters, mystery, revelations, timing, precision and the storytelling technique. Firstly, the sound effects bubble up to the plot with mysterious music during murder scenes. Secondly, the dark theme provides a character to the movie and gives a feeling of impending doom. Thirdly, the screenplay demonstrates the story in bits and pieces where we are left with unanswered questions that are answered only in the last few minutes of the movie. This technique captures our attention until the end. Vijay Antony‘s impassive character plays out the suspense of the story, giving him a serial killer’s look. His delusional and hallucinated persona is impressive. On the other hand, Arjun Sarja has a strong and smart role to solve the riddle. The game of suspense and revelations is strong until the end where everything comes together with an end that is satisfying.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The movie, in its absolute, is an epic but leaves the spectators with some unexplained instances. Also, the reasoning in the climax could have been made a bit more relatable and persuasive.
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH:
A perfect movie for those who seek strong plots, twisted stories and logical connections. The movie will give you the expected chills and an unpredictable climax. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best suspense thrillers of the year in Tamil.
