Verdict: Thala strikes back with an outstanding performance in this beautifully laid movie.
H Vinoth, who had previously directed the blockbuster Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, is back again with Nerkonda Paarvai – a legal drama starring Thala Ajith in the lead. The film also features Shraddha Srinath, Abhirami Venkatachalam, Andrea Tariang, and Arjun Chidambaram in pivotal roles with a guest appearance by Vidya Balan. Nerkonda Paarvai is a remake of the Bollywood film Pink, which featured Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu in the lead. The screenplay by Ritesh Shah has been co-written for the Tamil version by Shoojit Sircar and H Vinoth. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music while Nirav Shah is the cinematographer and Gokul Chandran handles the editing department.
What’s Nerkonda Paarvai About:
The story revolves around three independent working women and flatmates Meera (Shraddha Srinath), Famila (Abhirami Venkatachalam) and Andrea (Andrea Tariang). They are seen returning from a music concert but they seem disturbed. Apparently, three men they meet at the concert invite them for dinner and Adhik (Arjun Chidambaram) molests Meera. A furious Meera breaks a bottle on his head and escapes the scene with the other girls. Soon, they start receiving threatening calls. Although Meera lodges a complaint against Adhik, the tables are turned on her due to Adhik’s political connections and she is arrested for attempting murder. The girls’ new neighbor ex-advocate Barath Subramanian (Ajith Kumar), a man with severe depression and bipolar disorder, comes to their rescue and thus the courtroom drama unfolds.
Although remakes are a thing in Indian cinema, not all remakes do justice to the original. But here, even after adding essential elements to satisfy the Tamil audience, H Vinoth has successfully delivered a stunning movie that stands at par with the original. Ajith Kumar has taken on a different avatar this time, yet it doesn’t fail to mesmerize you. His voice stands apart and is a treat to hear. He gives a stunning performance that will be remembered for many years to come. The women are absolutely brilliant, especially Shraddha Srinath with her amazing portrayal of a distressed Meera. Her voice-over artist also deserves credits for the impeccable timing and making her performance look even real. Vidya Balan has a very graceful cameo and she looks stunning as well. The dialogues are perfect and relevant. The action sequence sure creates a spark among the audience. The music, especially the background score, is really nice and blends in well with the narrative. The movie has some excellent shots that are applause-worthy. Nerkonda Paarvai deals with a very significant social message and that has been perfectly delivered. This sure is a must-watch.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The movie, on the whole, is excellent. However, some songs could have been avoided and a little less drama would have made it a perfect watch.
Why You Should Watch:
Nerkonda Paarvai is for women who feel constantly judged by society, so basically, every woman. It is also for men who need to understand consent. The film gives you a realistic portrayal of women and the way they live in society. It tells you that ‘no’ means ‘no’ and it’s high time we understand that. Nerkonda Paarvai also has elements of entertainment and is a treat for Thala fans.
