The new year has kickstarted with a bang for the South Indian film industry. The Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film industry have presented films that have started this year on a positive note. Killing Veerappan (Kannada), Nenu Shailaja (Telugu), Style (Malayalam) and Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam (Tamil) have all gained appreciation from the audience. We’re on the next auspicious date of the month – Pongal. This means brand new releases will take over cinema halls. What’s more? The festival makes way for a long weekend. Here, we give you a preview of some of the biggest Tamil releases of this month:

1. Kathakali
After treating the audience to his latest hit film Pasanga 2, Director Pandiraj is ready with a commercial film starring Vishal Reddy. The trailer of the film gives us a glimpse into the film’s plot. An honest, simple, common man is caught in a web of problems when is he accused of killing the leader of a local rowdy gang. It sure looks like a action-packed revenge drama! What do you think?
2. Rajini Murugan
The team of Varutha Padatha Valibar Sangam is  back with yet another rib-tickling comedy – Rajini Murugan. The film centers around Rajinimurugan, a jobless and carefree young man, who spends most of his time with his friend (Soori). When these two are on board, funny one-liners are guaranteed! And there’s more! We’ll even get to witness Sivakarthikeyan mimicking Rajinikanth.
3. Thaarai Thaapatai
Director Bala is known to make films that have a high level of realism to it. His latest film is based on the lives of cultural performers and Karakattam. The film stars Varalakshmi Sarthkumar and Sasikumar. It’s also music composer Illayaraja‘s 1000th film. 
4. Gethu
After starring consecutively in romantic comedies, Udhayanidhi is now ready with an action thriller – Gethu. Directed by Thirukumaran (of Maan Karate fame), this film will highlight the father-son relationship between Udhayanidhi and Sathyaraj on screen.
