Charming, cute and bubbly – three words that precisely describe one of the most popular heroines of South cinema – Jyothika. If you’re familiar with her work, you might know that Jyothika is one of the few heroines who impressed Tamil cinema lovers with expressive performances and her stunning looks. She was also one of those few to have flaunted her curves.
Born and raised in Mumbai, Jyothika debuted in the Tamil film industry in 1999 with a cameo in the film, Vaali and went on to give several hits, including Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. 1. Archana, Mozhi 2007
Portraying the role of a deaf and dumb girl, Mozhi is undeniably the most riveting performance from Jyothika. Subtle yet powerful, Jyothika made the role of Archana feel like a strong and independent woman, who doesn’t need to rely on anybody’s approval to feel happy. This won Jyothika the Tamil Nadu state Kalaimamani award.
2. Ganga, Chandramukhi (2005)
You need some luck to star opposite superstar Rajinikanth. And delivering your best performance is another challenge. And, Jyothika did manage to to do both. She played the role of a girl diagnosed with a personality disorder. Her expressive eyes made Ganga seem convincing yet scary. Her performance fetched her the Tamil Nadu state award for best actress.
3. Sona, Vaali (1999)
Her first on-screen appearance was in a 4-minute song in the film Vaali. Oozing innocence and cuteness, Jyothika made us fall in love with her character. Despite the brief appearance, her character was indeed a memorable one. It also earned her a Filmfare nomination.
4. Geetha, Pachaikizhi muthucharam (2007)
In an era where heroines always played roles of miss goody-two-shoes, Jyothika dared to play the role of an antagonist in the film Pachaikizhi Muthucharam. She succeeded in making you root for the character who you’d otherwise hate. And that was her strength.
5. Aradhana, Vettaiyadu Vellaiyadu (2006)
Now who wouldn’t fall in love with Aaradhana? Starring opposite Kamal Haasan, Jyothika delivered the role of a modern mother with grace.
