The cigarette-in-mouth trick, the bossy attitude, the angry man who challenges the society, and of course, the punch dialogues. For those of you who are familiar with the Kollywood film industry, the filmy bug in you would’ve associated these trademark moves with Rajinikanth – the superstar who hypnotized the audience with his unique mannerisms. But Rajini isn’t just a superstar, he’s a phenomena. His unique demeanor that make fans go berserk are now being adopted by several movie stars. His distinctive moves are generously glazed on the demeanor of another hero, like the precious gold dust on a sinful piece of chocolate cake.
Rajinikanth’s ingenious style is reflected in two of the latest Pongal releases – Veeram and Jilla. While Vijay gave us the dynamic concept of a family feud, much like – Panakaran, whereas Ajith treated us with a Murratu Kalai-inspired Veeram. Now the latest actor to have taken inspiration from the superstar is Dhanush, evidently visible in the trailer of his latest film, Vellai Illa Pattadari (VIP).
The trailer opens with an irked Dhanush, delivering a line that reveals frustration over his unemployment – representing the woes of the job-seeking youth. The trailer later focuses on some funny moments, like that of Dhanush being taunted because of his qualification – complemented by a quirky background score. The trailer later transcends to a more serious level, where you see the Rajini factor clearly highlighted. Be it the punch dialogue, "Enna Sir? Vagudu eduthu varna mudi, boodi kannadi lam pathu pazham nu nenachitingala? Actualla nan konjam bad boy sir". (Don’t get deceived by my ‘geek’ look, I am actually a bad boy) – hinting that he can defeat the villains, or the style of puffing away a cigarette, with so much ease.
National Award winner Dhanush gives us some gritty moves, that is inevitably laced with the typical Rajini-style mannerisms. After facing debacle at the box office with his last two releases (Naaiyandi and Mariyaan) Dhanush promises to bounce back with his 25th film, Vellai Illa Pattadhari. The film seems to be packed in a well-fleshed commercial format. Let’s see if Rajini’s trademark style overshadows Dhanush’s demeanor, or uplift the mood the film.
Vellai Illadha Pattadhari is directed by Velraj, while Anirudh composes the music. The film is slated for a July release.
