From serial kisser to the next big thing:

Like a phoenix from the ashes Emraan Hashmi has successfully recreated, re-marketed, repackaged (whatever you may choose to call it) from serial kisser to one of the most sought-after actors in the Hindi film industry. The names of directors he has worked with can send jealous shivers down some of the most talents actors’ spines today. The list of directors he is about to work with is even more intimidating. The directory of talent when it comes to co–stars is even longer.

The Bhatts always had talent. From Mahesh, Mukesh, Rahul, Pooja to Mohit Suri, even Alia (although she is yet to prove herself). But the path that Emraan has crafted for himself, looks like he will surpass all of them. Gone are the serial kissing days it may seem. Not like they were not vital to his career. They gave him some of his biggest hits, maybe one of the largest fan followings any Bollywood actor has seen in recent times. Not to mention, made him the God of hit songs. People who may listen to Rock and Roll or maybe just EDM will still have the odd Emraan Hashmi Toh Phir Aao or Woh Lamhe by default on their music players. The upcoming Ek Thi Dayan with a seemingly non-commercial Kalki Koechlin, delivered a huge hit in Yaaram even before its release. The Emraan Hashmi magic? Maybe. Whatever the reason, he seems to have given Bollywood some of its biggest musical hits since his debut in 2003.

So, where did the tables turn for this hit factory and serial kisser. I would like to believe it was his tour de force performance in Awarapan as the gangster with the tragic past that was the tip of the iceberg. Critics and filmmakers alike began to take notice of the talent that lay beyond the commercial viability of this charming devil.

Then came Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai where he is rumored to have essayed the role of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Who better than TV Czarina Ekta Kapoor to polish this stone and hand him over to ace-director Milan Luthria to turn him into a diamond. The Dirty Picture and Shanghai were just the icing on the cake. Stepping stones to his ladder of success. Steering away from uncle Bhatt’s camp was probably a smart move then.

With Ghanchakkar and Ek Thi Dayan on release, one can only expect great things from the original serial kisser, bad boy and hit-factory of Bollywood.

Is he the next big thing then? Let’s wait and watch. My money is on this underrated Ghanchakkar actor.
