Mahanati is the first South Indian biopic based on the life of veteran actress Savitri. The movie stars Keerthy Suresh as Savitri, Dulquer Salmaan as Gemini Ganesan, Samantha Akkineni, and Prakash Raj. The ensemble looks pretty good.
Mahanati celebrates the actress and gives the audience a glimpse into the superstar’s life. Keerthy Suresh had this to say about the movie:
“We have seen Savitri on screen, but the film focuses on her off-screen life,” she said. “Eighty percent of the film would be about what turns her personal life had taken and how it had affected her career. We are very thankful to Vijaya Chamundeswari, Savitri’s daughter, who was a pillar in our scripting process. Speaking and spending time with her, I grasped a lot of mannerisms and character traits which helped me build my performance.”
Savitri began her acting career in stage productions as a child. In 1952, she made her Telugu cinema debut in LV Prasad’s Pelli Chesi Choodu. She had a highly successful career in the Telugu and Tamil film industries with a long list of hits.
She was Gemini Ganesan’s co-star and also his third wife. Together they had a daughter and a son. Their secret marriage got revealed in public because Savitri accidentally signed her contract with Lux as Savitri Ganesan. Gemini Ganesan is also the father of the beautiful eternal diva, Rekha. The film goes through the 47 years of ups and downs of the superstar’s life.
