Biopics are the rage these days. The trend that began in late 2016, thanks to the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer Dhoni and Aamir Khan’s Dangal   remains the major trend in Bollywood and has also crossed the Vindhyas and reached the South. With movies like Mahanati (Nadigaiyar Thilakam in Tamil) garnering critical acclaim and being extremely successful in the box-office, biopics is the latest trend in South Indian Film Industry. Ranging from historical figures to contemporaries, there are a huge variety of biopics in the making.

Kayamkulam Kochunni (Malayalam)

Director: Rosshan Andrews
Cast: Nivin Pauly, Mohanlal, Priya Anand, Sunny Wayne
Based on the life of the 19th-century heroic outlaw who robbed the rich to feed the poor during the British Raj, the movie stars Nivin Pauly in the titular role. Mohanlal makes an extended cameo appearance as robber Ithikkara Pakki. The film is written by the screenwriter duo of Traffic and How Old Are You fame, Bobby – Sanjay.
The trailer of the movie was released by Mohanlal and now, the expectations for the movie are sky high.

1945 (Telugu/ Madai Thirandhu in Tamil)

Cast: Rana Daggubati, Regina Cassandra
In 1945, Rana Daggubati dons the role of a soldier in Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s INA (Indian National Army). The movie is set in the backdrop of the pre-partition era (circa 1945). Regina Cassandra plays the role of a Chettiar girl who is married off to Rana Daggubati’s on-screen character. The movie also stars veteran actors like Sathyaraj, Nasser and RJ Balaji in pivotal roles.

Yatra (Telugu)

Director: Mahi Raghav
Cast: Mammootty
Yatra is based on the life of the late two-time Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Specifically, Yatra chronicles events that lead to YSR’s Padayatra. The first teaser of the movie was released on July 8 to celebrate the birth anniversary of YSR Reddy.
 

Untitled Biopic on Sukumara Kurup (Malayalam)

Cast : Dulquer Salman
When Tollywood, Kollywood, and Sandalwood industry is producing biopics based on celebrated historical persons, Mollywood seems to be interested in tales of the infamous and the outlawed. Sukumara Kurup is one of Kerala’s most infamous criminals who’s still on the lookout. In 1984, Sukumara Kurup murdered a person named Chacko and disguised as the deceased to extort money from the insurance company where Kurup was employed.

NTR (Telugu)

Cast: Nandamuri Balakrishna , Vidya Balan
NTR is based on the life of former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao and stars his son in the titular role. Vidya Balan plays the role of his wife and this movie would mark her Telugu debut. According to reports, talks are going on to get Paresh Rawal, Rana Daggubati and Bengali actor Jisshu Sengupta on board.

Untitled biopic on actor Shakeela

After Milan Luthria’s 2011 biopic on actress Silk Smitha, here’s another biopic on another sensational actress. Shakeela has starred in South Indian films in the 90’s and had a huge fan following in Kerala. The movie would be released at the end of 2018.

Sye Ram Narasimha Reddy (Tamil / Telugu)

Cast: Chiranjeevi, Nayanthara, Tamannaah, Jagapati Babu, Vijay Sethupathi, Kiccha Sudeep
Based on the life of freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, the movie will also be Chiranjeevi’s 151’s movie. The movie is produced by Ram Charan and the movie is produced on a whopping budget of INR 200 crores.
