The relationship between cinema and theatre has always been a give-and-take one. Early movies were inspired by their theatrical counterparts and rarely have we seen theatrical productions being inspired from movies. In 2016, after 56 years of release, we saw what could be said is a tribute to Mughal-E-Azam. The movie is an integral part of our cinematic history, and can now also be seen as a musical on stage. Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, the musical opened to houseful shows and amazing reviews last year. Everything from the setting to the costumes, was nothing short of magical. The songs that we have been crooning since years were presented in a new avatar, with new compositions, and there were no complaints.
The musical became so popular among Mumbaikars, that a second run of the shows was requested, where people who had seen it the first time still went ahead and saw it again. Yet, there are many who have missed seeing this classic on stage and for them, Mughal-E-Azam was back on 24th June. With costumes by Manish Malhotra and a set which will transport you back in time, this is one theatrical experience you cannot miss. The cast has been trained by Broadway experts, making this a path-breaking production for Indian theatre.
NCPA has always been known for offering the best of performing arts. From screenings of world theatre, to curating the best of what the art has to offer, you can expect something exceptional when you see a performance at the venue.
After a series of success runs at NCPA, Mughal-E-Azam is now going national and will be performed between 9th to 17th September in Delhi at Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium. For all the Delhiites who thought that they missed an experience of a lifetime, they can experience this magical and mesmerizing production live.
