10 Bollywood remixes for your playlist

No matter how much we love the newest releases in EDM, only a few of them possess the charm of a good ol’ Bollywood song. The energy, the passion and the emotion conveyed by Bollywood’s best tunes are unparalleled.

Luckily for us, we no longer have to choose between the two. In the last decade, remixes of Bollywood tracks have become increasingly popular. In fact, they have also been incorporated in mainstream films. If you want to enjoy the new takes on our beloved tunes, here are 10 songs you can add to your playlist:

Hawa Hawai

All of us remember being awestruck when we first saw Sridevi in the video for Hawa Hawai, don’t we? The actress was nothing short of ethereal in the video, which perfectly showcased her playful side.

In 2011, the film Shaitan brought back the tune, giving it an unconventional (but equally enjoyable) twist. The video for the remix was quite different from the original, as it showcased more than just the fun side of the film and its characters.

Engine Ki Seeti

Who doesn’t love some well-sung Folk music? Anjan Ki Siti, originally sung by Rehana Mirza, was the quintessential Folk song. It blended the simplicity and beauty of the melody with powerhouse vocals. In under 4 minutes, the song told us a wonderful story too!

Imagine our surprise when we learned that the song would be revamped for Sonam Kapoor’s Khoobsurat. Though the song stays true to the original for the most part, it does take a few liberties to keep up with the energy of Sonam‘s character.

Hungama Ho Gaya

Who doesn’t love Hungama Ho Gaya from Anhonee? Asha Bhosle’s melody, immortalized by Bindu’s screen presence, made waves upon its release.
We were overjoyed when we heard the track remixed in 2014’s Queen. In fact, the track seemed as good as (if not better than) the original! The riffs, the remarkable video and its placement in the film made us fall in love with the song all over again.

Mehbooba Mehbooba

It’s no secret that Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag was far from a cinematic masterpiece. The film, which was a remake of Sholay, failed to make even a tenth of the impact of the classic. However, if there was one thing that the remake did right, it was this remix.

The Mehbooba Mehbooba remix is perfectly suited to Bollywood buffs’ playlists, especially if they’re looking for a fast-paced rendition of a beloved classic. The song is an apt addition to everyone’s party playlist!

Kaanta Laga

In 1972, everyone fell in love with Lata Mangeshkar’s Bangle Ke Peeche. It came as no surprise that the remix of the song was a chartbuster as well.

DJ Doll’s remix of the song added an element of fun and energy to the song, which made it a huge hit. In fact, the song played a large part in kickstarting the trend of remixes. The risque video and the feisty actress made the already groovy song even more enjoyable!

Mit Jaaye Gham

When the 2011 film Dum Maaro Dum was announced, everyone expected the classic tune to be reprised. However, we did have our doubts about how Asha Bhosle’s track would fare as a remix.

Everyone was pleasantly surprised at how fun and energetic the remix turned out to be. Though some of the lyrics were (*cough*) less than ideal, the video made up for them. In fact, the energy Deepika Padukone brought to the video made it the perfect blend of the old and new.

Bachna Ae Haseeno

It’s not hard to guess why Rishi Kapoor’s Hum Kisise Kum Nahin smashed Box Office records. The film had all the elements of a blockbuster; including a solid premise, a charming protagonist and a killer soundtrack.

Thirty years after Rishi Kapoor wowed us, the song returned. This time, featuring his son, Ranbir Kapoor. The remix, which incorporates the essentials of the original, added a distinctly modern touch to the song. Watching Ranbir Kapoor with the three lovely ladies didn’t hurt either!

Yeh Mera Dil

Whether we’re talking about the video or the song, 1978’s Yeh Mera Dil was far ahead of its time. The foot-tapping melody, combined with the marvellous video, made for a fabulous return of the song.

Though the Yeh Mera Dil remix doesn’t compare to the original, it was still a nice touch to the film. After all, what is Don without Yeh Mera Dil? Kareena also gets props for her take on the iconic number!

Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh

Upon its release, Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh quickly became the most-famous song from Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai. If you’ve heard the song, you know exactly why. The song features the ideal combination of simplicity, beauty and meaningfulness.

Just when we thought that the original couldn’t be matched, we heard Bombay Talkies’ rendition of it. The lyrics and melody are perfectly suited to the scene, which takes it to a whole new level.

Taki Taki

There were a lot of things that Himmatwala got wrong. Fortunately, this song wasn’t one of them. The track takes a new spin on Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle’s original song.

The song’s new rendition retained the original’s fun element, while also adding a modern touch to it. It also didn’t hurt that the video featured Tamannaah at her most beautiful!
