It’s probably declared the judgment day for all music aficionados worldwide. The glitzy night witnessed personalities from the world of music arrive in style at the 56th Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, California. This year, the Grammy witnessed several fresh talents receiving the major awards, paving the way for recognition of the new talents and adding a new dimension to the musical scenario.
5 Big Grammy winners
The big winners at the gala event were the futuristic robot-uniformed French electronic-duo, Daft Punk who swept away 5 trophies including Album and Record of the year. The duo also won the trophy for Best Pop Group performance for their viral club anthem, Get Lucky. Their album, Random Access Memory also won them the Best Dance/Electronica album and the best-engineered album. Even though they couldn’t give their acceptance speech, the hug shared by them on the announcement of their award was adorable.
Why they deserved to win
The last time they won a Grammy was for Alive for which they won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2007. Daft Punk have been pioneers in elaborating visual elements and effects in music for more than a decade. This year, they beat out several renowned artists to scoop up the awards. This is a way of recalling why these Frenchmen have indelibly burnt so deep into the public’s eye for the last 20 years. If you still haven’t heard this album, you are really missing out on some good techno music.
Seattle-based Rap-duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won four Grammy awards including Best new artist edging out the popular nominees like Eminem, A$AP Rocky, Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. They also won best performance and Best song for Thrift Shop and Best Album for The Heist.
Why they deserved to win
It’s the 1st time since 1994 that a rap song reached the number 1 spot on the Billboard Top 100 without the support of a record label. That very achievement deserves mighty respect for this determined duo. The sensational hit album The Heist reached the #1 spot on the iTunes chart in just a few hours of its release. Although their song, Same Love, lost out to another new artist, it definitely made headlines last year. The song brought to attention the LGBT community and won many hearts.
Why was everyone on Twitter mad at them?
Right after the duo swept away the awards, a hard-hitting debate about the rapper’s win began to percolate on Twitter. Many pointed out that Kanye West’s New Slaves should’ve won the award for Best Rap song and Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid Maad City should’ve won for Best Rap album.
The main debate over this win is, whether Macklemore is a pure pop artist than a rap one. Kedrick Lamar responded to the situation saying the duo deserved the award, he also mentioned that everything in the universe happens for a reason.
17 year-old New Zealander Lorde took home the coveted Song of the Year Award at the Grammy’s this year beating the likes of veterans like Sara Bareilles, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, and Justin Timberlake. Wearing black lipstick and fingernail polish ‘Gothy’ Lorde treated the crowd to a live rendition of her hit single Royals for which she also won the Best Pop Solo. Royals was also nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance; Lorde’s album Pure Heroine got her the Best Pop Vocal Album.
Why she deserved it
In the world of music where skin show is the new in thing, Lorde’s unconventional style and approach added a fresh insight to her song. It provided a new dimension to pop music. Tremendously talented ‘Gothy’ Lorde provides hope in pop music landscape.
Even though Skyfall came out in 2012, it is still in its glory of sweeping awards. The title song of the James Bond film which already won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe earlier now has also been awarded a Grammy. The song fetched singer Adele her 10th Grammy Award. Skyfall also won Thomas Newman the Best score soundtrack for visual media.
Why they deserved to win
This is the first time Legendary music composer Thomas Newman won a Grammy in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. Thomas Newman has 6 Grammys to his credit. One big reason Adele deserved this award is because she not only rendered the song but also co-wrote it. This adds to the one of many awards she’s won.
World’s most-successful band, Led Zeppelin were honored with Best Rock Album Award for their live recording of Celebration day. The nomination of their song fell into controversy due to the live recording of it. The Grammy Awards had also nominated Zeppelin’s performance of Kashmir as one of the best rock performances of the year.
Why they deserved to win
The world’s most-influential Rock groups in history, Led Zeppelin won a Grammy for the very first time ever since its existence in 1968. Yes, you read that right. In 1970, Led Zeppelin were nominated for Best New Artist. That was the last of it. They were nominated again this year for their album, Celebration Day. This high-voltage electrifying album truly deserved it.
Red Carpet Fashion
The best part of any awards show is to judge the best and worst dressed. Grammy 2014 witnessed celebs in who played it safe, and didn’t take any risks. The theme of the event was probably to keep it simple yet stylish. However, a few celebs did go over the top and made many a fashion blunders.
Model Chrissy Teigen who looked a million bucks in her glittery Johana Johnson gown. The plunging neck-line of her gown, and the soft-curled hair added to the oomph factor for the model. Anna looked smashing in her Azzro gown, teamed up with the right accessory and one-side soft curls. Ciara choose the right gown to show-off her baby bump. She looked radiant in the full-sleeved shimmery gown.
Anna Faris kept it simple and stylish. The sweetheart neck-line, gathering at the waist and the flow of the dress added to the style.
Just about okay:
Taylor Swift looked like a prom queen in her shiny Gucci gown that fit perfectly. She teamed it up with a pair of diamond earrings. Katy Perry‘s Valentino gown was a look that could have one befuddled. Even though she took the theme way too seriously, We are glad she kept it simple with the accessories and tied her hair into a bun.
Beyonce showed-off her curves in a sheer lace gown by Michael Costello. We could’ve given plus points if she had done her hair to match her costumes. This dress was also reminiscent of the one Jenifer Lopez wore at the Golden Globes two years ago.
Colbie Cailat in her red-flowy gown reminded us of a pageant dress, it was too flowery and way to flowy. We really didn’t understand the odd placement of the division between her neckline.
Pink wore a red satin gown and looked very old-fashioned. It also reminded us of a dress that could inspire a new range of lingerie. Nadeea looked over the top. She looked like she was going for a Halloween party since she chose to dress up as a jeweled plant. Then there was Ashanti, who got everything with her look wrong, right from her see-through gown, a very deep slit and her ankle-length black shoes, which actually looked like a pair of socks. Other notable celebs include singer Kaya Jones in her high slit, black dress.
Recording artist Sara Bareilles who wore a feathered dress and looked like she took major inspiration from an ostrich and then there was Chrisette Michele who wore crowded patterns and clashing colours.
Disappointments on the Red Carpet:
We were highly-disappointed on the absence of a few showstoppers, who are probably the only ones known for their impeccable fashion sense. We highly missed seeing Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Nicky Minaj and Miley Cyrus at this overtly simple evening. It would’ve been highly fascinating to see what prominent style was used in their attire.
The Ranger hat
Pharrell William’s ranger inspired hat caught the internet’s attention. The American Rapper’s Twitter handle received several memes of the hat, which actually belongs to a vintage Vivienne Westwood number from the designer’s 1982-1983 Buffalo collection.
Parent-Child match the costumes day
Madonna arrived with her son David in matching Ralph Lauren outfits. Madonna also wore a grill. We can’t help but say that she reminded us of the dude from the Quaker Oats box. Meanwhile, Yoko Uno and her son Sean Lennon also wore similar cowboy style outfits. We just hope this doesn’t become a trendsetter.
India’s Brand ambassador
A.R. Rahman was the global face of India at the Grammys. Rahman posted pictures on a social networking site. Rahman looked handsome in a deep blue coloured shirt teamed up with a matching blazer. The music Maestro has previously won two Grammys in 2010 for the film, Slumdog Millionaire.
Shockers and Surprises
The musical evening opened to the queen of pop music Beyonce swaying to some smoking, steamy, performance of “Drunk in Love” with her rap star husband Jay Z. Yup it was steamy alright, the television channels even had to censor a few scenes out. Meanwhile Jay Z even went on to winning the Best Rap/Song Collaboration for Holy Grail, his duet with Justin Timberlake, but he dedicated his gold trophy as the new sippy cup for his daughter Blue Ivy. Now isn’t that sweet?
Other than Sippy Cup, the evening witnessed some memorable speeches by legends. The Beatles received a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Special Merit Category. Ozzy Osbourne called the Beatles "The Greatest Band Ever," and then he was lost for words when his Black Sabbath band-mates finished a tribute performance. Cut me some Slack, by Sir Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic & Pat Smear went on to win the Best rock song of the year.
The gala event also witnessed some terrific performances by Katy Perry who beseeched everyone with her witch-themed performance. Katy Perry danced on a stage in a circle engulfed in flames. She closely resembled a dragonfly (Just saying). Pop queen Taylor Swift didn’t receive any accolades for her much-talked about album Red and she certainly seemed disappointed, she also became a target of internet meme when she dramatically began ‘Head banging’ while playing the piano. Singer Pink treated the audience to some live acrobatics. This act was actually similar to the one she did a few years ago. Although it seemed staged, one of the main highlights of the evening was the mass marriage of more than a dozen couples.
Queen Latifah officiated the weddings while new award winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performed their song Same Love, which became an anthem of the LGBT community. The icing on the cake was when Madonna also performed. This moving visual caught everybody’s attention including Keith Urban‘s.
Who according to you came the best or the worst dressed at this Gala event? Do you agree with the Jury’s decision?
