5 Must-See Music Festivals in 2015

With spring and warmer days comes one of the best seasons of the year- Festival Season! If you are a music junkie like me, you surely know that the onset of spring means doing away with cold, dark winter days – with the happy force that is music! This is the season to rediscover old favourites, and also explore the new and trending.

According to me, a music festival is one of those “once in a lifetime” experiences that is definitely worth the investment (in terms of both money and time). For the frugal minded, a lot of festivals allow you to rent camp sites for a minimal fee, so you can enjoy the ambience without having to burn a hole in your pocket for expensive accommodation. If you are willing to splurge, VIP Access passes are the way to go – sometimes these even include meet-and-greet’s with your favourite artists and performers. For your pleasure, I’ve ranked the top 5 music festivals to watch out for in 2015 – I hope you can catch at least one of these!

Coachella, one of the most famous music festivals around, easily tops the list. With separate line ups on two different weekends, you may even spot some of your favourite celebrities jamming out to some tunes at this valley fest. Coachella has a reputation for attracting the best crowd, diverse artwork, and plenty of good vibes to go around. With many different stages, a plethora of art installations and headliners from the ever classic AC DC to hip-hop sensation Drake, Coachella has a little something for everyone.

The well-known Lollapalooza caters to those with an interest in alternative rock, punk rock, heavy metal and sometimes a bit of hip-hop and electronica. Apart from music, Lollapalooza features a “Green Street” where fans can buy environmentally sustainable goods from vendor stalls. It also partners with many non-profits, spreading the message of social responsibility for a better world. This year’s line up features Paul McCartney, Florence and the Machines, Sam Smith and Alt-J amongst others.

It may not be as famous as Coachella or Lollapalooza, but don’t let it’s obscurity fool you – Paradiso is definitely a “paradise” for the lover of EDM. This festival was founded quite recently (in 2012), but has brought in over 30,000 attendees with numbers increasing every year. Hosted at one of the most beautiful locations for a music festival, Paradiso takes place at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington, overlooking the Columbia River – and the tagline for the festival “Where Digital meets Nature” couldn’t be more accurate! Not only can you be assured of a weekend of beats and bass, Paradiso even has death-defying carnival rides for the more adventurous. This year, some of the biggest names in EDM will be in attendance (think Skrillex, Armin Van Buuren, Knife Party, Martin Garrix and more), and promise the set of a lifetime.

Bottlerock, as the name suggests, is a festival for all those wine and beer aficionados out there. If the idea of listening to great bands and sipping on some of the finest brews and wines in the scenic Napa Valley setting appeals to you, then Bottlerock is the place to be. Some may see Bottlerock as a more subdued event, but you can be sure that the flowing alcohol, delicious food and a line up featuring Imagine Dragons, Snoop Dogg, Passion Pit, and No Doubt (to name a few) promises a weekend full of debauchery.

Another festival at The Gorge Amphitheatre, Sasquatch! is home to some of the biggest names in indie, experimental and underground music. The headliners this year include Lana Del Rey, Spoon, Of Monsters and Men and Kendrick Lamar. If you have no plans for Memorial Day weekend, this is where you want to be! Every year is full of surprises, with new eclectic artists being added to the line up as the festival edges closer.
