Happy birthday to our happy guy, Pharrell Lanscilo Williams! Best known for one of the catchiest tunes of our times Happy, the American singer-songwriter, rapper, record producer, and film producer turns 44 today. Born in Virginia, he is the oldest of three sons of Pharaoh Williams, a handyman, and his wife Carolyn, a teacher. Pharrell stated that he was a nerd and often did things that made him stand out from most of his peers. He has maintained that on paper he is a Christian but is really a Universalist.

In the early 90s, Williams along with Chad HugoShay Haley and Mike Etheridge, formed a four-piece band, The Neptunes, which produced soul, hip-hop and R&B music. As part of the band, Williams has produced numerous hit singles for various recording artists. Pharrell himself has co-composed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Hans ZimmerJohnny MarrMichael Einziger and David A. Stewart.

He has earned 10 Grammy Awards, including two with The Neptunes. He is also a two-time Academy Award nominee, receiving a 2014 Best Original Song nomination from Happy (featured in Despicable Me 2) and a 2017 Best Picture nomination as one of the producers of Hidden Figures. He was also the executive producer of the 2015 crime comedy-drama film, Dope.

At the 86th Academy Awards on March 2, 2014, Williams' song Happy lost to Let It Go from Frozen. When asked about how badly he wanted the Oscar, he responded: "When they read the results, my face was…frozen. But then I thought about it, and I just decided to…let it go.” Well, played, Pharell!
