Verdict: An album for which any descriptive measure is an understatement.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s genius is in abundance. Bajirao Mastani, the album, is simmered and flavorful. The lyrics are beautiful and transcendental. Deewani Mastani paces off in Marathi before Shreya Ghoshal’s mysticism sets in, in Hindi. The lyrics in Bajirao Mastani are hard to ignore. Even the smallest fraction of Urdu qawwali in Deewani Mastaani stays in your subconscious. Siddharth-Garima do an applause-worthy job with the wordings. Arijit Singh’s mainstream popularity is much heard of. But with this album, the versatility of the singer takes the center stage. Aayat is a joint effort by Arijit Singh and lyricist A. M. Turaz. Not to forget, Bajirao Mastani evolves as an album only because of the multifarious support, which includes the chorus. Malhari snaps you out of the romanticism. High energy vocals and a perfect rhyme scheme go hand in hand in Malhari. Vishal Dadlani is rare and precious.
The musical score for Mohe Rang Do Laal is an inflection of a more solemn mood. Classical music in Bajirao Mastani is composed layer by layer, brick by brick, to make the experience worthwhile. Pandit Birju Maharaj and Shreya Ghoshal sing soulfully, invoking overwhelming emotions. The discovery in SLB’s album is Payal Dev. Payal’s Ab Tohe Jaane Na Dungi is very subtle and yet grand, from start to end. It has been sung with tangible emotions of love and affection, and the voice does not lose its delicacy throughout the song. The dominant Marathi track Pinga travels beyond lingual limitations. It strikes a chord with every listener. Of the ten dynamically different tracks in the album, Pinga is a song of celebration. Vaishali Made and Shreya Ghoshal make this one a memorable number.
With every song from Bajirao Mastani, the experience gets richer, the lyrics deeper, and the sound resonates. Javed Bashir’s Aaj Ibadat is no less than a glittering gem to ornate the already beautiful album. It is another classical rendition stays and grows in your heart. Gajanana, a Ganpati vandana track is averagely done. Sukhwinder Singh’s charisma isn’t very long lasting. A second song partially written in Marathi is Fitoori. Fitoori brings out the superseding brilliance all the way of Ganesh Chandashive and Vaishali Made. A very delicate amount of tension in the female vocal is brought out through the inflection in her tone. This palpable moment is interjected by a contrasting chorus in Marathi. The coming together of both blends very well in Fitoori. With Albela Sajan, the grandeur of Bajirao Mastani comes full circle. An ensemble of singing talents join hands to build up the quality of music with Albela Sajan, which is a classical Hindi song redone for Bajirao Mastani.
