Dhamakedaar Dialogues: Nana Patekar ki Zubaani

Nana Patekar is one of the most talented yet under-discussed actors of Bollywood. Nana’s presence in a scene can never go unnoticed because of his sheer brilliance. Ideally, credit for his dialogues should go to the writers, however in Nana’s case, the credit should largely go to him because he was known to ad-lib his dialogues.

Below are some of his most epic dialogues:
Wajood (1998)
Much before Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots, the film Wajood had tried to spread the message of pursuing one’s dreams relentlessly.
In one of the scenes in the film, Malhar(Nana Patekar), a Third Class B.A is having a argument with his father about why he has chose Dramatics as a vocation over a regular job.

Father: Maine socha tha jo main nahin kar saka voh ye karega, doctor banega, army office banega, collector banega.
Malhar: Har koi degree diploma le, engineer bane, koi zaroori nahin. Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Zakir Hussain ko koi nahin puchta, tumhari degree kya hai?
Yeshwant (1997)
Yeshwant(Nana Patekar), an honest but suspended police inspector is returning from the railway station after bidding his wife(Madhu) farewell, who is on her journey to become an ISA officer. As he is leaving he stumbles upon a couple of loafers on the railway platform, who are playing cards. He slaps one of the loafers repeatedly for creating a ruckus on the railway platform.

Loafer: Yaar apan lawaaris hai na, isiliay apne pe koi bhi rob jamata hai.
Apan ka Ma, Baap nai hai na…
Yeshwant : Aye, kya lawaris? Lawaris main bhi hoon samjha na? Station par patte pistey nahin baitha, inspector bana, suspended hai lekin inspector hai. Voh gayi na meri biwi, ISA exam ko gayi hai, voh bhi lawaris hai. Lawaris hona koi gunah nahin hai, badkismati zaroor hai. Usey takat banaoh, dhol mat peeto, "lawaris hai, lawaris hai".
It was for Krantiveer that, Nana Patekar won a National Award. Pratap Narayan Tilak(Patekar) has been wrongly framed and is about to be publicly hanged for having fought for the rights of others. Before he is about to surrender to this shameful death penalty, Pratap, delivers the most powerful speech, relevant even today.

Here’s an excerpt from his speech:
"Tumhari ye na-mardangi, buzdili, ek din is desh ki maut ka tamasha, isi khamoshi se dekhegi…Andhere mein rehne ki adat padi hai tumko, gulami karne ki aadat padi hai. Pehle Raja-Maharajaon ki ghulami ki, fir angrezon ki, ab chan gaddar netaon ki aur gundon ki…Upar waala bhi upar se dekhta hoga toh usse sharam aati hogi. Sochta hoga maine sabse khoobsurat cheez banayi thi, insaan. Neeche dekha toh sab keede ban gaye…keede!"
Tum Milo Toh Sahi (2010)
In this film, the character that Nana plays is getting his purchases billed at a general store. The lady at the billing counter offers him a toffee in place of change, something that we encounter on a day-to-day basis. However Nana, offers her his shoe in exchange of his purchases, and claims that to be his currency. This hilarious scene is brought about with much simplicity by the talented Nana.

Nana: I want my change.
Girl at the counter: Sir mere paas change nahin hai.
Nana: Toh fir uske badle mein aap toffee doge? Matlab iske badle mein hum dusra kuch denge…toh humko denge aap samaan?
(Nana promptly takes out one of his shoe and places it on the counter.)
Ye maine, teenso nabbe rupaiy mein kharida hai…iske badle mein aap ye le lo…this is my currency.
Yeshwant (1996)
The film Yeshwant etched the following monologue of Nana Patekar in the history of Hindi cinema. Through his humble, yet boisterous dialogue delivery, he brought about the real plight of man in this ruthless world.

Yeshwant: Ek macchar, aadmi ko hijrah bana deta hai…aatma aur andar ka insaan mar chuka hai, jeene ke liye ghinaune samjhaute kar chuka hai…
Bollywood is lucky to have a talented artist like Nana Patekar as a part of it’s industry. However we honestly feel that it hasn’t given this genius of a man the respect and acknowledgement he deserves.
