Nannbenda: Film Review – An imaginative story let down by its bland humor

After Ok Ok and Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhalan, Santhanam and Udhayanidhi are back with Nannbenda. Directed by Jagadish, Nannbenda is an attempted rehash of Ok Ok and Boss Engira Bhaskaran, bearing a heavy tone of director Rajesh’s style of film-making. And director Jagadish manages it quite well.

The movie which seems like a thriller in the beginning, turns out to be quite a surprising story. And the filmmaker reveals these incidents pretty well. The film does revisit some clichés including the hero’s friendship, love-at-first-sight, chilled-out parents and the usual cheeky comedy. Fortunately all this works in a smooth narrative with interesting subplots.
The one where Nayantara reveals her true ‘dark’ past, is a cracker. It was intended to make the audience laugh, and when the heroine is disappointed with the hero for failing to sympathize, she becomes ‘an angry bird’. The events that follow are supposed to make us laugh harder. But the comic proceedings fall flat. Probably because you don’t expect an intelligent… Sorry, I mean an independent and brave woman like Ramya (Nayantara) to expect sensitivity for her crime. Imagine a 20-something heroine in the same role. The portrayal of her character might have probably been different. The hero’s mother gives him a way to spot the right girl. According to her, the ideal way to spot your true love is to coincidentally meet her thrice. And as a sign of approval a bell will ring. Ugh…this is potential stalker advice! No thanks.
Our heroine, Nayantara, looks like million bucks in her long and flowy gowns during the dream-scenes. She looks quite confident while in 4-inch heels. It’s definitely a cake walk for her. Udhayanidhi tries his best, he has improved on his dance and acting skills. Santhanam‘s scene presence definitely brought a lot of cheers in the cinema hall, but it seemed like the actor has only given a half-hearted performance. Harris Jayaraj gives us some good tunes (which often sound like repetitions of his previous compositions).
Despite the repetitive casting, Nannbenda works because of its imaginative subplots presented in a smooth narrative. This could’ve been a rib-tickling film, but falls short due to its bland humor.
Why you should watch this film:
If you’re looking to have a good time at the cinema, then this movie is perfect for you. Also, if you are a fan of Santhanam, Udhayanidhi and Nayantara, then this movie is sure to entertain you.
