It is a great time to be a Bollywood fan. While Padmaavat is still going strong in theatres, Akshay Kumar’s Pad Man is slowly worming its way into the box office. And the movie that will pose its biggest competition is Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary. Starring Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee in prominent roles, the movie also features veteran actors such as Adil Hussain, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and Vikram Gokhale. Rakul Preet Singh will also be seen in a Bollywood film after four years and former Miss India Pooja Chopra is also set to star as a supporting character. The trailer of this film reminds us a lot of Pandey’s other films, mainly due to its politics-inspired theme. So if you want to know what to expect from Aiyaary, simply watch Neeraj Pandey’s previous films. Here’s a list of the top five:
An unnamed man causes panic of the highest degree among the Mumbai Police when he threatens to blow up five locations in the city lest four arrested militants are released to him. The 1 hr 43 mins film revolves around the police finding the bombs as well as the identity of this person. What happens, in the end, is one of the biggest twists Indian cinema has ever witnessed. Akshay Kumar and his team pose as CBI or income tax officers, conducting raids on wealthy businessmen and politicians. In reality, they are just a gang of con-men stealing from the rich. But the police and the real CBI are onto them and hope to thwart their plans with a special task force they have put together. But, in the end, the task force learns something jaw-dropping about those special 26 people.
With a premise not very different from A Wednesday!, this movie explores a counter-intelligence team’s operations of foiling terrorist attacks led by a maniacal militant. The team is on the clock, where they need to find the terrorists’ location, discover their plan, and stop it before they cause any more destruction. Even without the signature plot twist, this film is fast-paced and lives up to expectations.
While this one is slightly different from his usual films, here Neeraj Pandey explores the real story of Naval Officer K. M. Nanavati, who is accused of murdering businessman Prem Ahuja. While the plot seems like a classic story of a civil servant gone rogue, there’s a lot more this movie offers. The story itself is fascinating and the performances, even better.
A spin-off of Baby, this film is based on one of the previous film’s supporting characters. It chronicles the journey of an intelligence officer and explores how she became a spy. While it did not do as well as its predecessor, the film was certainly a success and is one of the many spin-offs the director has planned for the future.
