For this year also the nominations were unveiled in various categories. From having a look at the nominations, it is clear that it going to be a tough competition to select the winner. Let us take a look at the list of nominees in major categories at Golden Globe nominations.
Best motion picture: Drama
12 Years a Slave
Well, the movie which genuinely deserve to win best film is 12 Years a Slave. Without doubt, one of the most unflinching and brutal portraits of racism and slavery on screen. Directed by Steve Mc Queen, it is an adaptation of epynomous 1853 autobiography of Solomon Northup. 12 years a slave tells the story of New York state born free Negro who is sold to slavery and how he finally emerges free after 12 years. This movie is a piece of cinematic achievement. Gravity comes a close second which is also an achievement in itself. This film stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as astronauts who face mid-orbit destruction and their attempt to return back to earth. Gravity has also met with universal acclaim and is a close contender for the title.
Best actress in a motion picture (drama)
Cate Blanchett- Blue Jasmine
Sandra Bullock- Gravity
Judi Dench- Philomena
Emma Thompson- Saving Mr. Banks
Kate Winslet: Labor Day
There are two strong contenders for this role. First one is Dame Judi Dench for her remarkable performance in Philomena. Her role as an ageing lady in search of her son is remarkably profound in the movie. In this movie Judi Dench stars as Philomena who as a pregnant teenager in 1950s Ireland was forced to give up her son for adoption after giving birth to him in a Catholic Abbey is one of the remarkable performances of her career. As a soft spoken and a bit frumpy Philomena Lee, this role of hers is in contrast of her hugely popular role of M in James Bond franchise. Cate Blanchett’s role in Blue Jasmine is also a strong contender. Her performance as a rich Manhattan socialite who ultimately falls in destitute poverty and homelessness is one of the heart-wrenching performances of her career. Still by looking at the stats and the reaction of the audience in the west, it seems that the bet is more in the favor of Dame Judi Dench.
Best actor: Motion picture (drama)
Chiwetel Eliofer- 12 Years a Slave
Idris Elfa: Long Walk to Freedom
Tom Hanks: Captain Philips
Mathew Mc Conaughey: Dallas Buyer’s Club
Robert Redford: All is Lost
Chiwetel Eliofer ‘s role as a slave who was formerly a free northerner is brilliant. Likely to win but then again Mathew Mc Conaughey’s role as a AIDS patient & activist and Robert Redford’s wordless performance in All is Lost as a man trapped alone at sea is equally wonderful. Redford is again strong contender along with Chiwetel Eliofer .Really a tough category to decide the winner. In this category, there is the compelling performance by Chiwetel Eliofer as a free and educated black man who is sold to slavery where he must pretend that he can’t read or write in order to survive. to compete with him is the performance of Mathew Mc Conaughey as a rodeo cowboy who smuggles drugs from outside america in order to stay alive is considered as the star’s career best performance. Then there is Idris Alba whose role as as anti apartheid revolutionary and former South African president Nelson Mandela is a towering performance and reprises the role of the icon with much grit and truth. Add to this, the Hollywood legend Robert Redford’s performance wordless performance in the role of a man trapped alone at sea is again the one which is a moving one. It is his performance of a lifetime and simplicity and minimalism he exudes on screen makes him the closet contender to the award. Difficult to decide between Chiwetel Eliofer and Robert Redford.
Alfonso Cuaran: Gravity
Paul Greengrass: Captain Philips
Steve mc Queen: 12 years a slave
Alexander Payne: Nebraska
David 0. Russel: American Hustle
Every director is this category is a known name and the competition to win the best director prize is going to be difficult again. Steve Mc Queen has made quite a reputation for himself having directed highly acclaimed films such as Shame and Hunger. His name has almost become synonymous with high quality movies and this time again he has lived up to his reputation and has directed a brilliant film in 12 Years a Slave. Now it is only at the day of the awards we will be able to know which film got the coveted title.

The two TV series which are the closest contenders are Breaking Bad and House of Cards. Although House of Cards leads Golden Globe nominations , Breaking Bad is a real favorite too. House of cards is American political drama which is based on a BBC miniseries series of a same name.Breaking bad is another hugely popular series which is the story of a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with cancer.
