O Teri: Film Review

As soon as the movie was over, all I could utter was ‘O Teri‘. And a sigh of relief. Yes, it is Salman Khan‘s brother-in-law’s movie which stars him in the title song. But even his presence couldn’t save the movie.

O Teri revolves around two antic, young, good-for-nothing journalists Prantabh Pratab a.k.a. P.P. (Pulkit Samrat) and Anand Ishwaram Devdutt Subramanium a.k.a. AIDS (Bilal Amrohi). Time and again they cover ridiculous news stories driving their channel head, Monsoon (Sarah Jane Dias) mad at them. Ultimately she warns them, if they are not able to bring up one decent scam story, their career is at stake. Meanwhile, the city is gearing up for the upcoming Asian Games Olympic, the perfect opportunity for the corrupt government officials to devour the public funds. The ruling politician, Khawaja (Anupam Kher) and opposition leader, Kilol (Vijay Riaz) play their share of dirty politics. Soon PP and AIDS manage to sort out all the political mess and unravel the ‘biggest scam’, changing their and nation’s lives forever.

Umesh Bist’s O Teri is a dreadful mash-up of scams, corrupt politicians, selfish industrialist, lobbyists and unscrupulous media persons. The unending number of scams in India forms the crux of the movie. From Niira Radia’s audio tapes to Commonwealth Games, you think of any scam of the recent past and you’ll find it. O Teri’s release tries to encash on the present mood of the nation where scams are the hottest topic along with the imminent elections. Unfortunately, in an attempt to include all the recent scams in a 107 minutes film, the director ended up creating a chaotic and perplexed affair.

The director tried to give a patriotic touch to the movie with a message towards the end. But the entire execution is miserable that instead of thinking about the message you are wondering about several other matters, for example: The lead characters names are AIDS and Monsoon (seriously?). A smiling dead body that doesn’t decompose even after so many days? (A spoof of classic movie ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron‘ that fell far beneath the mark). A gay politician visiting a cheap motel to make out with his partner? And much more.

Pulkit Samrat‘s performance is decent. But needs a role that will discover his potential to the fullest. Bilal Amrohi definitely needs more lessons in acting. He was all over the place with his over-the-board acting skills. Renowned actors, Anupam Kher and Vijay Riaz went with the flow of the lousy script. Their talents were literally wasted. Mandira Bedi as the media manager was not upto the mark, though she tried giving her 100% to the role. Sarah Jane Diaz as the channel head was not the right choice of her character. The rest of the supporting cast gave a mediocre performance.

From the deliberately inserted songs to the cinematography to visual effects, nothing was at par with the standard of a Bollywood movie. The only relief is that the movie was well edited. Less than 2 hours of torture. Though intended to be a comedy film, the funny element didn’t come off, making it rather a dull and boring movie.

Why should you watch this film?

O Teri
definitely doesn’t deserve your precious time and hard-earned money. But if you call yourself the one who watches every new release, then the ball is in your court. Watch it at your own risk.
