A terrible and unfortunate piece of news has emerged on the first Friday of 2017. Om Puri, an actor who was known for his strong portrayal of characters across a multitude of genres, is no longer among us. He succumbed to a massive heart attack at the age of 66. He had made his debut with the Marathi movie Ghashiram Kotwal (1977). With a career spanning over four decades, he has not only won accolades in Bollywood but also explored the British and American cinema, along with independent movies. He was all set to make his Pakistani debut this year. His off-screen life was no stranger to controversies but there have been a variety of instances where Om Puri outshines everyone because of his sheer dedication to his character, whatever the length of his roles. Here are five movies where he leaves his mark on our minds.
A ten-minute cameo that created waves and regarded as one of his best performances. Puri used his command over voice modulation to deliver a sad sequence without making it overly dramatic and yet, managed to tug at our heart strings.
He literally had a two-minute role in the movie. But the power of his acting was enough for everyone to take notice and opened doors for him to showcase his talent overseas.
Ardh Satya (1983)
We have seen a lot of movies where we see a cop fighting against the corrupt system, usually with some dramatic fight sequences. This movie was renowned for its depiction that was closer to reality and Om Puri even won a National Award for his role in the movie.
The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)
This was Om Puri's second movie in Hollywood and he definitely made a mark and although the movie might have received mixed reviews, his performance was greatly appreciated.
Chachi 420 (1997)
If any movie can prove his versatility, it is this one. He definitely owned the comedy genre with his impeccable comic timing in this movie. Another movie that proves this beyond doubt is Hera Pheri, when it comes to comedy and versatility. Om Puri knew his craft like no other.
The legend will be greatly missed. May his soul rest in peace.
