Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai Dobara: Film Review

When the tagline read “This time it is personal,” our minds sure started ticking as to how the film will provide us an insight into a gangster’s life? With its prequel having set a benchmark for itself, it was difficult to gauge the story; no presumption could be hailed righteous except one which said that it is a love triangle and it sure is.

Milan Luthria’s second installment in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai franchise is all set to hit the 70 mm tomorrow but it is not much prying into the don’s life as much as it is a love story. Although, the film is less likely to muse the audience, it sure will give them a thrilling experience. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara (OUATIMD) is a completely fictional story woven around the character Shoaib (Akshay Kumar) who is an infamous Don. He who rules the city of dreams wishes to rule a heart full of dreams.

Shoaib’s quest to nail down his rival, Rawal, a Prem Chopra fanatic don (played by Mahesh Manjrekar) brings him back to Mumbai. But while traversing the magnanimous Arabian Sea, Shoaib comes across a bold yet a tad-bit timid girl, Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha) and ends up losing his heart. Her innocence and her small town etiquettes cast a spell on this evil prince. Jasmine’s aspires to become an actress and Shoaib becomes the benefactor in her life, but all this without her knowledge. Aslam (Imran Khan) is a Dongri boy who is Godfathered by Shoaib. When Aslam crosses paths with Jasmine he too falls for her. On one hand, where Shoaib is dreaming of a world with Jasmine, Jasmine has already fallen in love with the reckless and friendly Aslam. It is when Aslam and Jasmine are getting closer, things look slick and clean but when you think the story is treading the right path, it takes a swift turn. This twist brings the audience closer to a merciless killer whose need to conquer his love has overridden his aims. What follows is the chase for love. He who sweeps the Queen off her feet shall be declared as the King!

While the first half of the film is fun-filled and romantic, the other is tragic and action-packed. In the first half, the flight of love bird takes off while second half shows its landing.

Luthria makes fewer attempts to show violence and stresses more on the characters and their dialogues. Be it the signature dialogue “Bas dua main yaad rakhna” delivered in Jasmine’s adas, Aslam’s bollywood punches “Zuban ki chupi, pyar ki pappi lene he nahi deti” or a rigid voiced dialogue of on screen Shoaib “Agar main hero ban gaya toh meri pehchaan bura maan jayegi” will sure interest the viewers. Having given equal importance to all the three leads  the film survives the major flaws which challenge a viewer’s logic only due to the wonderful act put up by the trio. Sonakshi does very well as a small town girl; Imran gets into the skin of a Dongri goon while Akshay comes out as stiff Don with a starched way of talking. Along with the trio, the film also has some surprise elements that will add the ‘oomph’ factor to the sequence.

Talking about the music of the film which is given by Pritam, except a few songs others only remain as background music. The remix of Tayaib Ali, made famous by Rishi Kapoor in yesteryears, one can certainly expect applause and whistles. Although a film with a notable star cast, it is likely to come out as an ordinary story with a tight script.
