Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi : Film Review – A Chaotic Wedding Affair

Verdict: Rishi Kapoor-Paresh Rawal save the day.

This year has probably had the most wedding movies cinema has ever seen – Running Shaadi, Baaraat Company, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha – we could go on. Joining the list is Vir Das, Paresh Rawal and Rishi Kapoor's rom-com, Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi which is exactly what the name suggests, a drama based on inter-caste marriage.

While we may think inter-caste marriages may no more be an issue, veteran actors Paresh Rawal and Rishi Kapoor who are sharing screen space first time in 20 years after Damini show us the actual problems in a Gujju-Panju love-story. How? Read.

Hasmukh Patel (Paresh Rawal) is an orthodox man who lives in Mumbai with his two daughters Nimisha (Jinal Belani) and Pooja Patel (Payal Ghosh). Mr. Patel, being the strict father he is, has imposed a lot of restrictions upon the Patel family daughters who are not allowed to go out of the house, not talk to people, or do anything fun for that matter, due to a dark past. But things change with the entry of Tandon family, who has shifted in the house right opposite and have an over friendly approach towards Patel's family. While Hasmukh Patel and Gurpreet Tandon (Rishi Kapoor) are quarreling over little things, Monty Tandon (Vir Das) is busy impressing Pooja. In the due course of time, they end up teaching the Patel family how to have fun. However, they end up breaking Nimisha's marriage and that's where things get ruined. What happens here on you need to watch to find out.

It's very hard to not find yourself laughing in a movie that stars both Vir Das and Paresh Rawal. Rishi Kapoor is an added bonus to the film. While the story may not be entirely flawless, it sure is entertaining to watch. We have to admit though, the lead cast got overshadowed by the parents which may have been the only drawback of the film. The music of the film is just about okay but the performances are pretty impressive.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
If you're looking for a light-hearted wedding drama to see with your family, this two-hour comedy could be your ideal choice to watch over the weekend. A one-line review of the movie could be perfectly summarized with the song Dil Le Gayi Kudi Gujarat Di.
