Phantom is a counter-terrorism drama produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Kabir Khan. It’s the director’s second movie this year after the winner he made called Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Phantom is a fictional take on the aftermath of the 26/11 terrorist attacks that shook Mumbai in 2008. The movie plot explores the possibility of the Indian government taking an aggressive stance against the perpetrators of the dastardly attacks. The stars of the movie, Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan play secret agents who are out to bring the conspirators to justice.
Phantom releases this week and it remains to be seen if this will prove to be yet another feather in Kabir Khan’s cap. Here is a quick recap of the hows, whens and whats of, "A story you wish were true".
Film Annoucement: The news and hype around the action-thriller began to make headlines in August 2013. The movie was tentatively titled Daniyal Khan, after the character played by Saif in the movie.
Filming Begins in Lebanon: The filming began in late Oct 2013, when Katrina and the rest of the crew landed in Beirut. The film was earlier expected to release in April 2014.
Filming in Mumbai: The Mumbai scenes were shot in December, 2013. An interesting scene around the Gateway of India features Katrina arriving in a ferry. Now what could that be a recreation of? We’ll have to wait a few more days to find out.
Shooting in Kashmir: In Jan 2014, the Phantom crew had a 2 week-long schedule in Kashmir. Kabir Khan tweeted about the wrap-up.
Postponing Release: The film’s release was postponed to 2015 from 2014; the release date fixed at 3rd April 2015. The date was postponed yet again and changed to 28th August 2015.
Censor Rating: The Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) clears Phantom with a ‘U/A’ certificate and minimum cuts. Some Hindi swear words were cut out too.
First Look: On 24th July, the first look of the film was released. The two actors blind-folded with the tri-color and a burning Taj Mahal Hotel in the background created a stir.
Trailer: On 25th July, an intriguing trailer was released that further raised the curiosity around the movie.
Pakistan bans Phantom: On 10th August, the movie was banned in Pakistan after Jamat-ud-Dawah Chief Hafiz Saeed filed a petition in the Lahore High Court.
