We’ve seen Hollywood’s version of the dreaded ‘R’-word in Wall Street. After Anjaana Anjaani here’s a second take from Bollywood, with a funny bone. One can either create cry-stories about a tragedy or mock and poke fun to overcome it. The second formula works beautifully here to craft a fresh story line and script, a change from the A-list powered love story doses we are so often force-fed.

When the Great American Dream turns into the Great American Nightmare, NRI businessman Om Shashtri (Rajat Kapoor) is knee-deep in mortgage debt. If he doesn’t cough-up $100,000 within 30 days, he stands to lose his house to the banks. Om returns to India to liquidate a small ancestral property and ends up being intimated by a smiling yes-man, Anni (Manu Rishi), “Sir, aapka Official Kidnap ho gaya hai!” Ironically, the local goons are also ‘recession hit’ and are under the false belief that they’ve bagged a big fat juicy duck! Gang leader, Bhaisaab (Sanjay Mishra), thinks his days of misery are over. When reality bites, this bottom of the pyramid gangster repackages his ‘bad’ debt and resells it to a bigger gangster. Incredulously, Bhaisaab and Shashtri mint money but how long can they keep up the con? Watch the script draw a brain-tickling witty parallel to the root of the American recession, how bad loans were repackaged, sold and resold for higher valuations than their net worth, but with a desi twang!

Rajat Kapoor is a perfect fit for your stereotypical NRI though his wife is a poor mismatch and comes off as irritating and very oblivious. For a seasoned Rajat, this isn’t unfamiliar territory. Neha Dhupia as Munni, a self-proclaimed “female Gabbar Singh”, who heads an all-women’s gang, has a significant if not meaty role and does adequate justice to the same. But the true stars of this comical parody are Sanjay Mishra, Amole Gupte and Manu Mishra. Along with the rustic dialogues (quite funny in spurts) and scenery, their distinct characterization will transport you to rural India.

Goons, gangsters, female Gabbars and even the local pashu minister, all get entangled in this madness. What’s to happen to poor Mr. Shashtri when this bubble finally bursts? Watch and laugh till your stomach bursts!
