Verdict: Just another Pirates installment, helped by IMAX 3D and as always, Captain Jack Sparrow.
Based on Walt Disney's theme park ride titled Pirates of the Caribbean, we've now reached the fifth installment in the swashbuckler series – 'Salazar's Revenge', also known as 'Dead Men Tell No Tales'. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, with a script by Jeff Nathanson who was aided by Johnny Depp.
While the previous films were infamous for their long run-time, the fifth edition has definitely seen an improvement, although it does tend to drag towards the end. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, who are among the most familiar faces of the series, make merely a cameo in the film, which is disappointing after their absence from the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides. The other most familiar faces, of Kevin McNally and Geoffrey Rush reprise their roles as Joshamee Gibbs and Hector Barbossa, respectively.
This edition sees the addition of three cast members, Javier Bardem as Armando Salazar, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. While Javier does a terrific job as a horrific dead man, Kaya overtakes the big Spaniard as the best addition of the film, playing the role of an sharp-tongued astronomer. And as always, Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, steals the show.
The previous film was a stand-alone sequel and this one is a brand new adventure. It is revealed how a young genius Jack Sparrow outsmarts Captain Salazar, and tricks them into entering the Devil's Triangle. After escaping, Salzar and his crew of dead sailors return for revenge. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, aided by the alliance of Carina and Brenton.
The highlights of the film include Jack Sparrow and his crew robbing a bank, causing havoc throughout the town. A Moses-like division of the sea is also spectacular, while a starry scene is as stellar as it gets. These spectacular scenes make the film worth watching in IMAX 3D. While the sound may be too loud for most, Hans Zimmer's protege Geoff Zanelli has proven himself and has made his master proud.
You will see a lack of logic on a couple of occasions, which contribute to the film's plotholes. Let's not forget that it is a Walt Disney film intended for kids, after all. The film does just about enough to stay afloat. Savvy?
Why You Should Watch This Movie: Watch it for the aforementioned spectacular scenes – the film is full of such top class CGI. And of course, Captain Jack Sparrow!
