Poltergeist: Film Review – Closets are still scary

Tobe Hooper’s classic horror film Poltergeist left an indelible mark on our minds. Released way back in 1982, the film is still considered to be one of the most petrifying horror films ever shot. Some of the scenes of the film are so scary that they still haunt you long after you’ve watched the film. Who thought a tree could be so menacing?

No one was expecting a remake of this cult horror film. But this year, Gil Kenan gives us a swanky new remake of Poltergeist. Is it scary? Yes. Is a reboot necessary after almost three decades? Not exactly, but surprisingly enough, Gil Kenan strikes the spot with his film. If you have watched Kenan’s previous films, you will get a slight hint of The Monster House in Poltergeist.

The plot of Poltergeist remains the same as the old one. The Bowen family just moved into a nice house in an idyllic American suburb. Little did they know that their life is going to be a dangerous mess involving supernatural forces. Keeping up with the smartphone age, the poltergeist attacks not just the television but also mobile phones and tablets. We also have drones now! Hunting down the poltergeist just got much easier.

Usually, horror films are a platter of cliches. But, Kenan does a good job with this reboot. The jump scares are good and not predictable. Gil Kenan makes good use of special effects.  Michael Innanen who also worked on films like Kick Ass, Max Payne and The Incredible Hulk, works magic with the special effects. You will not be disappointed.

Both Sam Rockwell as Eric Bowen and Rosemarie DeWitt as Amy Bowen give good performances. The kids (Madison Bowen, Kendra Bowen and Griffin Bowen) are also likeable. Jared Harris and Jane Adams add to the film as the perfect ghost busters. Lined with light humour and loads of thrills,  Gil Kenan’s Poltergeist makes for a perfect (but scary) weekend watch.

Why should you watch the film?

Who doesn’t love a good horror film? Horror, as a genre is overused and abused. It’s very rare that you come across a film which is genuinely scary. Although the film connoisseur may not approve of this remake of classic horror film, Gil Kenan’s Poltergeist is packed with enough thrill to keep you entertained.  Shot in 3D, the film will take you on a scary ride. And, whether you accept it or not, there’s always something creepy about closets.
