Poovarasam Pee Pee: Film Review – An intriguing summer adventure

A movie made on the lives of teenagers usually deals with a level of perception of themselves; concentrating on pranks to play on the teachers, deviously trying to escape from homework and how not to forget, falling in love. But Halitha Shameem’s debut Poovarasam Pee Pee is much more than this, it treats you to a delightful experience. Even though it starts off at a shaky pace, it later transcends into an engaging film that offers moments both sweet and fun moments.
This film surprises you, mostly because it portrays the story of three boys who are on a quest to avenge the wrong-doers of the society. However, this isn’t a film about the rich-poor social divide. This also isn’t about a language divide amongst students. Instead, it’s a film that talks about three young boys, much in the cinematic style. What works best for it is the portrayal of these kids, who are fluent in Tanglish (English + Tamil), and are simultaneously, brave enough to pin down evil.
Earlier on in the film, you see three young boys collecting the jewel Beetle, promoting the bug as a Feng Shui element and selling it in the local market, in order to relish the joy of having a big tub of ice cream. We also see them cultivate their hobby of creating crafts and enjoying the bliss of the summer vacation. These moments spell pure innocence. But the pre-teen years aren’t entirely about enjoying life at its trivial best alone. It’s about discovering themselves at teenage. These well-intended sequences are slightly washed down by the heavily ‘blissed-out-of-innocence’ style dialogues, which perhaps is one of the drawbacks of this film.
The unintended ‘masala’ movie clichés – the love story (shown in flashback), a friendship saga that results in a song, placements of sequences in the first-half that have you bewildered and the employment of a slightly jarring background score, make the film what it shouldn’t be. Nonetheless, despite its forgettable flaws, the film is a commendable effort. Especially for the director-writer-editor-colorist’s effort to showcase an unusual subject such as this along with the talented cast – Gaurav, Praveen and Vasanth, who deliver sparkling performances.
Why you should watch this film?
Watch this film for it’s unusual story line, that takes you on an adventurous journey. This film will have you cheering for the boys, Pee Pee FM 88.8 style.
