Priest: ‘Holy Smokes’

What to look out for: The action packed last half hour.

What not to look out for: Chocolate boy Cam Gigandet smeared with dark make-up, hoping to be taken seriously.

“Priest” very conveniently falls in the ‘not bad’ category. With a slow start that paces up towards the end, it’s a decent attempt. But it lacks depth, clarity and characterization. Futuristic and religious subjects like church v/s evil are best left to epic adventures and ‘Priest’ is nowhere close to being one. Based on the same-named graphic novel by Hyung Min-woo, “Priest” lacks the punch and zing that others in the genre have. It ends up being a somewhat sincere attempt that’s a decent watch when you have nothing better to do.

In a futuristic world ravaged by war between man and vampires, Paul Bettany plays a legendary Warrior Priest living among downtrodden human inhabitants in a walled-in city ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, the Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her; before she is killed or worse, infected. He is joined on his crusade by a young wasteland sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and a former Warrior Priestess (Maggie Q). During their search what they find is far more devastating than they imagined. It’s up to the three of them to save the endangered human civilization as well as the young niece held captive by the vicious vampires.

Paul Bettany and Maggie Q provide some great actions thrills towards the end, but despite that, the concept is too far-fetched to be believable. The settings and backdrops are so dark in parts that one begins to feel its intended, so as to keep things vague. The writers should take notes from the likes of ‘Tolkien’ and ‘Paolini’ when it comes to creating whole civilizations that are believable.

If you do decide to watch it, pick the 2D option. It’s exhausting to watch a film in 3D when there is nothing 3D worthy about it, except a few vampires popping out unexpectedly.

Verdict: “Priest” is like mac and cheese, perfect for when you’re out of options.
