Punjab 1984: Film Review – Kirron Kher and Diljit Dosanjh depict the strength of a mother-son relationship

On the heels of 47 to 84 comes Punjab 1984, another film that tackles the subject of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Punjab 1984 is the story of Satwant Kaur (Kirron Kher), a woman in search of her son, Shivjit (Diljit Dosanjh). As she tries to locate her son, Satwant crosses paths with corrupt policemen, politicians and other wrongly accused young men. The film traces Shivjit’s journey through the anecdotes and tales shared by people who have encountered him.

The movie is an honest look at a devastating time in Indian history. It skilfully explores topics like terrorism, police brutality, communal riots and family relationships. Instead of simply recounting the events of 1984, the film takes a look at the aftermath of the riots. Through Shivjit and Satwant’s stories, it shows the impact of large-scale events on individual lives.

Kirron Kher delivers her best performance in years, as the doting and hopeful mother. She adds an emotional depth to her character that makes your heart ache for her. Diljit Dosanjh is equally amazing, if not better, as Shivjit Singh. The actor, who has primarily starred in comedies, shows that he’s more than just a one-trick pony. His portrayal of an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances is remarkable, and possibly, his best performance yet.

Each member of the supporting cast adds a distinct flavor to Punjab 1984. Pavan Malhotra is notable as the menacing policeman, Deep Singh Rana. Arun Bali, Gurcharan Channi and Sonampreet Bajwa also deliver stellar performances, making every character memorable.

However, the real star of the film is the cinematography. Each scene is beautifully shot. In fact, every frame looks like a breathtaking painting on a canvas.

To add to this, Punjab 1984 also has some beautiful and soulful melodies that fit the film perfectly. Diljit sings tracks like Channo and Rangrut, which stay with the viewers long after the film.

All things considered, Punjab 1984 is a spectacular film that takes an unapologetically brutal look at historical events. While doing so, it maintains a level of skill and sensitivity that makes it a film that cannot be missed.

Why should you watch this film?
Punjab 1984 is a stellar film that explores human emotions and relationships. It takes a fresh perspective on an age-old topic. The movie features remarkable performances, beautiful music and breathtaking cinematography, making it the complete package.
