Raag Desh: Film Review – Brotherhood at its best

Verdict: A gritty portrayal of India’s freedom struggle.

India was under the British rule for years and while many events about the country's Independence have made it to the big screen, some of them are still unheard of. Raag Desh, which is helmed by critically-acclaimed director Tigmanshu Dhulia, brings to life the Red Fort trials of 1945.

Maj. Gen. Shahnawaz Khan (Kunal Kapoor), Lt. Col. Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon (Amit Sadh) and Col. Prem Sahgal (Mohit Marwah) are on trial for conspiring against the British Army. The three soldiers are a part of the Indian National Army, the brainchild of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Giving their all for their country, they lead troops to fight battles in different areas. The Britishers want them to be severely punished and now their only hope is lawyer Bhulabhai Desai (Kenneth Desai).

Tigmanshu Dhulia has always got the setup spot on. His films are mostly set in the heartland and the authenticity shows in every frame. With Raag Desh, he has chosen patriotism as a theme and successfully manages to invoke a sense of pride in you. The court scenes have enough tension apart from the heavy dialogues. Kenneth Desai is perfectly cast as the man who has to twist facts in order to save the lives of the soldiers. Mrudula Murali makes a brief appearance but in the end, it is up to the three lead actors to deliver. Kunal Kapoor, Mohit Marwah, and Amit Sadh get nearly the same amount of screen time and each of them make an impact. The scenes with them together also show the camaraderie shared by men united by a common cause.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

Raag Desh brings to life an important chapter in Indian history. There are barely any songs, which keeps the narrative tight, and well, to top it all, the performances are spectacular. Don’t think twice before booking your tickets as Raag Desh will touch your patriotic side.
