The actor turns 49 today. Over the years, he has been seen in many popular movies including Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Vishwaroopam, Jhankar Beats and Dil Dhadakne Do. Besides cinema, the actor is even popular for his widespread social work. He has supported various causes such as children’s education, environment, gender equality, human rights, and actively worked for them. A social activist, he is best known for assistance in the aftermath of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, when he launched the Andaman and Nicobar Scholarship Initiative that provided free education for underprivileged children. He is kind, humble, generous, and a great actor and entertainer. Here are 10 facts about him that will surprise you:

1. Rahul Bose is the son of Rupen and Kumud Bose. That makes him half-Bengali, one-fourth Punjabi and one-fourth Maharashtrian.

2. Bose has a sister, Anuradha, who is married to Tariq Ansari, owner and director of Mid-Day Multimedia.

3. The actor and social activist has another feather in his cap! He is an ace rugby player and even participated in the Asian Rugby Football Union Championship in 1998 as a part of the Indian national rugby team.

4. That’s not all! He also played cricket under the guidance of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, captain of the Indian cricket team and father of Soha and Saif Ali Khan.

5. Like most regular actors, Bose started his career in another field. He worked as a copywriter for Rediffusion – an advertising agency. Now, he has one thing in common with Ranveer Singh!

6. But acting was his passion. His first role was in a school play – Tom, the Piper’s Son – in which he got the lead role. He later moved on to professional theatre, starring in Rahul D’Cunha‘s Topsy Turvey (1989) and Are There Tigers In The Congo? (1993).

7. Bose’s onscreen career started off with a high, too! His first film English, August was the first Indian film to be purchased by 20th Century Fox and won many awards at international film festivals.

8. The actor has been on TV, too! He starred in India’s first English-language show, A Mouthful of Sky, and later co-hosted BBC World‘s Style!

9. Before Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Bose’s claim to fame, he tried his hand at screenwriting and directing. His directorial debut, Everybody Says I’m Fine! starred Pooja Bhatt, Boman Irani and the actor himself. Even his sister had a cameo role in the movie.

10. While the actor is unmarried, he has six kids! In 2007, he adopted six children from the Andaman and Nicobar islands, after raising INR 2.4 million for the children’s education and upbringing.
