Verdict: An entertaining blend of romance, comedy, and drama.
Raja Abroadiya is an amusing tale of Indians falling in love abroad. Delivering lots of laughs, blooming romances, and some captivating drama, this rom-com is a sure shot joyride. Loads of fun characters keep you delighted from beginning to end.
What's Raja Abroadiya about:
Raja is the wealthy son of a disappointed father (Yograj Singh) and overly doting mother (Vaishnavi Macdonald) whose ego sends him on a quest to become an "abroadiya". Fueled by a challenge proposed by a drunken villager, he sets out to prove that he will indeed be successful in finding a foreign girl to marry him.
Preety, on the other hand, is the daughter of an alcoholic father who puts the family in deep debt. She is determined to do well abroad and provide for her family.
With the help of their stereotypical BFFs (Alankrita Bora, Harry Verma) they find each other. Soon they get married for a visa and set out to Germany where romance, heartbreak, and an unexpected love triangle unfolds.
The film is consistent with a steady pace of entertainment while moving back and forth from comedy to romance, to drama. Although the film is based on the Bollywood cliché of two Indians falling in love abroad, it gives it a refreshing new take.
Raja’s naive and immature nature lends itself to a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. Tons of loud characters who have their own set of quirks, including the lead couple’s own sidekicks/BFFs add some necessary comedic flavor. Along with these hilarious moments, the film also balances the plot by exploring serious topics like alcoholism. Like any other rom-com, there is no shortage of drama as well. The lead characters find themselves in an interesting dilemma at different points in the film. This adds an essence of personality to these characters along with their well detailed back stories.
What could have been better:
The endless supply of running gags and exaggerated characters tend to be a tad bit repetitive. But this also keeps the entertainment factor at an all-time high. While it delivers the laughs, the plot leaves us wanting more, which can be ignored if you're looking for a happily ever after kind of film.
Why you should watch this movie:
If you’re looking for some no-strings-attached joyride, this is the movie for you. All in all, it is the kind of romance flick where you leave your brain behind and have a blast! If you’re looking for an enjoyable escape, there is no better plan for you this weekend.
