Rajinikanth Set to Conquer Southeast Asia

If there’s one film that’s creating an astounding buzz in Kollywood, it is the superstar Rajinikanth-starrer, Kabali. Touted to be a gangster film, Kabali is in the news ever since the project was launched. For starters, this film is special because of Rajinkanth’s decision to star in a film directed by a two-film old filmmaker, Pa. Ranjith. What’s also interesting is that the popular actor will play the role of a gangster in this film. The hype around this film doesn’t end here. Kabali is creating and breaking new records. Kabali teaser (which released on 1st May), has now garnered 19 million views (and counting) making it the most-viewed Indian film teaser on YouTube. The record was previously held by the teaser of the Bollywood film Dhoom 3 (17 million views).

Apart from this, the film is creating a record of sorts in the international market as well. Kabali will be the first Indian film to be dubbed in Malay. Malik Streams Productions and Distribution, a Malaysian media company will release the film in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

It’s quite a task to find a voice that matches that of Rajinikanth’s, which is why the process of selecting the right dubbing artist took quite some time. Over 200 people auditioned to dub, and were asked to read the punchline of the trailer – Kabali Da. And after two weeks of auditions, a Malaysian citizen named Arun was selected.

But one has to note that Rajinikanth is not new to the South Asian audience. In 1995, his film Muthu became the first Tamil film to be dubbed into Japanese, as Muthu Odoru Maharaja It was a commercial success. The film ran only in one theatre, The Cinema Rise, which is a small 2-screen cinema hall with a total of 300 seats and yet managed to win the attention of the Japanese audience. Eventually, it was deemed as a cult hit. Apart from theatrical releases, his films Sivaji and Enthiran were released in DVDs as well. This is quite a big deal for an Indian actor to have a steady hold in a market where Hollywood films rule.

Rajinikanth is also one of the highest paid actors in Asia. Wow, talk about tapping the international market with your very charm, style and powerful screen presence – three elements that perfectly describe Rajinikanth.

Kabali is set to release in July, 2016, and we’re sure it’ll create new box-office records.
