Gumnaam hai koi, badnaam hai koi…
At least once in our lifetime, we would have tried to scare the wits out of someone by singing this spooky song. Nothing can replace the fascination of that one eerie feeling we get when we witness something supernatural. Though their existence raises doubts in all rational and scientific minds, popular culture, especially our books and movies are full of spine-chilling stories about them.
Bollywood has had an early connection with the ghosts with the initial image of a woman dressed in a white sari with a candle in her hand and feet twisted being the perfect embodiment of female ghosts. Later, we saw over-the-top ghost makeup, coupled with sleazy screams and bodies rising from their graves in the famous Ramsay Brothers` films.
From Gumnaam (1965) to Raaz Reboot (2016), Bollywood has come a long way in exploring ghosts and their worlds. Bollywood’s latest ghost venture ‘Phillauri’ made much noise owing to its interesting trailer. The Anushka Sharma starrer is set to release on 24th March this year.
As we sit and wait for Anushka’s fun avatar to come on screen, let us take a look at some of the best friendly and not-so-friendly ghosts that Bollywood gave us.
Considered a cult horror classic, Raat, written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma, starred Revathi as the possessed protagonist. This has to be one of her best performances.
Naseeruddin Shah in Chamatkar (1992)
Naseeruddin Shah has to be Bollywood’s most loved ghost. Chamatkar is a revenge saga in which a friendly, hilarious ghost befriends a youth (Shah Rukh Khan) to avenge his own murder.
Urmila Matondkar in Bhoot (2003)
Urmila Matondkar won numerous awards for playing the part of a possessed wife in Bhoot. Are you wondering why? Watch the movie now.
Shah Rukh Khan in Paheli (2005)
Apart from the movie’s soulful music, what makes it more endearing is Shah Rukh Khan romancing as a ghost while assuming the identity of a young bride’s husband.
Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om (2007)
Deepika’s debut in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om opposite SRK was one of the biggest events in 2007. The movie had everything; big star cast, lots of songs, reincarnation, comedy, romance and tragedy. But the climax has to be one of the most memorable scenes.
Kareena Kapoor in Talaash (2012)
Now, who would imagine a damsel helping a cop (Aamir Khan) to solve a high-profile murder case to be a spirit? Kareena Kapoor was the perfect surprise in this film and how we would love it if all spirits were to be as pretty as Bebo.
