The Research Caravan – Satyamev Jayate

They travelled and with them travelled the will to make an impact that wasn’t to fade away 60 minutes after their show was aired. This was a special caravan. It had gypsies stimulating ideas after every blinding tunnel. Some were left back in the confinements of those dark tunnels while most of them came forward. No points for guessing – the man who was at the helm of this journey was none other than Aamir Khan.

But here we intend not to throw light on his achievements, his star power and least of all his films. Because the caravan had more than just ‘Perfectionist Khan’. It was home to those unsung heroes who for more than two years put in their sweat and blood to make Satyamev Jayate what it is today.

Satyajit Bhatkal, the director who earlier teamed up with Aamir Khan during the making of Lagaan returned to project his sensibilities through the medium of television this time. A lawyer by profession, he soon realized his interest in filming and television. In the making of Season One of this show, Aamir admits to have thought of Satyajit soon after the idea struck his mind. The show gained popularity for its format and TRPs were sky high since the first episode. All this happened only after Satyajit with his team, planned the vast coverage of subjects to be discussed.

Svati Chakravarti Bhatkal, journalist and media activist was roped in, keeping in mind her show of sport and courage in the field of journalism. Satyajit who also happens to be her husband, jovially admits that he was skeptical at the beginning about his marriage ending up in trouble because of the show. She breathed the dust in places which required the team to travel for covering stories of many who were introduced as guests on the show.

Because of all that she had to her credit, the team often kept her in the forefront while many of the sting operations were conducted. And the footage that got recorded successfully helped in nabbing those who were responsible for the plight of the victims on the show and many more around the country. Undoubtedly, Svati emerged to be one of the strongest stones of foundation for the show that was telecast across all channels of Star TV network.

Geniuses are not born in a day. Indeed, Satyamev Jayate makes this cliché evident. The core team made regular visits to the ‘Sultanate of Pali’ which was the star’s house that soon turned into a spare office for brainstorming over the developments. Satyajit along with Svati met Aamir Khan for the sessions through the course of which SMJ took shape.

Apart from the three minds that functioned, there was another pillar of support without whom Satyamev Jayate had the fear of running factually incorrect. Lancy Fernandes headed desk research which helped the team in conceiving the subjects statistically and empowered them with a wider sense of awareness. He was consulted for matters that required the team to know about ground realities; be it the topic of female foeticide, child sexual abuse or the misuse of pesticides in farming. Aamir handpicked the three of them and instilled unflinching faith till the end.

The show began its Second Season on March 2, 2014 has garnered good word of mouth from every corner. The team has worked tirelessly to make this show not only a medium to create awareness but also to make every viewer contribute to the best of his capacities. We only hope to lend a hand in this revolution called Satyamev Jayate so that the positive change in the Indian colony is manifold from this day.
