Rohit Sharma: Astounding Stats & Figures

On December 13, 2017, a regular and unremarkable Wednesday, Indian ODI opener Rohit Sharma did what he had done on November 2, 2013, and November 13, 2014. Three years might seem a long time to repeat a feat, but 99.999999999 percent of international batsmen spend careers failing to accomplish this particular feat.

Rohit Sharma scored his THIRD double century in ODI cricket, a little more than four years after he scored his first against Australia at Bangalore. He finished on 208 not-out against almost every Indian favorite opposition, Sri Lanka, in a do-or-die match of a futile 3-match bilateral ODI series, in only his second international game as Indian captain. With skipper Virat Kohli away for his wedding, Sharma celebrated his own second wedding anniversary by gifting his tense wife, Ritika Sajdeh, in the stadium with a gold-crusted 200 only a few days after his team was shot out for 112 at Dharamshala.

In the process, Rohit “hitman” Sharma went on to smash a few more records, joining Kohli as the only contemporary Indian batsman to be ruling limited-overs cricket in such a dominant manner. With this, he has established himself as one of the greatest and most prolific ODI openers of all time – joining legendary names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Gordon Greenidge, Virender Sehwag, Saeed Anwar, Adam Gilchrist, and Matthew Hayden. And to think, before that double century in Bangalore four years ago, he averaged 31 in ODI cricket with just three centuries to his name.
