Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, aka Ronaldinho, can do almost anything on a football pitch. With his arsenal of skills, he has played several positions (especially in attack) throughout his career, although his usual role would be the ‘classic number 10’ in an attacking midfield role. Born on March 21st, he turns 36 today, which is the age by when most footballers retire. Still very much in the beautiful game, let’s celebrate the Brazilian’s birthday by looking at some of his greatest moments.
The highly respected man has had almost no controversies and very few red cards in his career so far. Not only have his peers said the greatest things that can be said of a footballer, but they have also shown their respect to him with words of praise, kisses on the forehead (Diego Maradona too has kissed his hand), removing his shoes to keep them as a memento, bowing down to him on the pitch, etc. When fans run on to the pitch during the match, they usually hug him without letting go, touch his feet, cry in his arms, etc. He has happily accepted and appreciated all these gestures, with no arrogance whatsoever. The two-time FIFA World Player of the Year award winner (2004 and 2005) has endorsed brands like Nike, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, EA Sports, Gatorade and Danone, earning over $19 million from endorsements itself in 2006.
While Maradona and Pele are legends in their own right, and Ronaldo and Messi rule this generation, Ronaldinho is widely regarded as the most skillful and talented player to ever grace the pitch. Even mentioning his 800 appearances, 300 goals and 170 assists might not give you the full story about his abilities as a footballer. He specializes not just in scoring but also creating goals and entertaining the crowd with his slick moves. Check out this video below, which has not only his top 10 goals but also his top 10 skills/moves:
