Punjabi film industry is going through a definite positive change. There is an advent of new writers and directors who are not shying away from attempting new stories in varied genres. Saab Bahadar, a murder mystery, is one such film which takes the road less taken. The movie stars Ammy Virk, whose movies have had a golden run at the box office until now. Also, Saab Bahadar brings back the writer-actor team of Jass Grewal and Ammy Virk after the hugely successful Bambukat. Do the makers of Saab Bahadar manage to pull off a suspense thriller? Saab Bahadar is a story set in the early 90’s in a remote village somewhere in Punjab. A police officer, Kuldeep Singh (Ammy Virk), popularly known as Saab Bahadar by everyone in the village because of his sensibility, reputation and respect. There are a series of crimes in a rather peaceful village. How Saab Bahadar, alongwith his accomplices Kabal Singh (Rana Ranbir) and Nahratta Ram (Jaswinder Bhalla) manage to unravel the mystery behind repeated crimes forms the rest of the story.
Any murder mystery should have an engaging plot and, more importantly, an apt finale. Thankfully, Saab Bahadar succeeds in both. The film merges conspiracy, tension and tragedy with dexterousness. Add to it the turn of events, the razor sharp dialogues and of course, the suspense, and you have an exceptionally constructed mystery with Saab Bahadar.
Writers Jass Grewal and Gurpreet Singh Palheri make sure that Saab Bahadar has an attention-grabbing premise. They manage to spin a tale that makes the viewer a participant of sorts. While the cops try hard to solve the jigsaw puzzle, the viewer gets intrigued by what he observes and perceives and is keen to get to the bottom of the mystery himself/herself. It's the sort of film that's extremely tough to pull off, but team Saab Bahadar pulls off the trick with aplomb and composure.
Director Amrit Raj Chadha creates the right ambiance essential for a suspense drama. The way murders take place one after another add on to the suspense and the authentic mood keeps the viewer at the edge of the seat. The finale, sure enough, is all important in a film of this genre. In this case, the identity of the murderer hits the viewers like a ton of bricks. The motive behind murders is heartrending and believable. The film delves into deep, dark secrets and that makes the conclusion a satisfying wrap.
There’s no denying the fact that Ammy Virk is the heart and soul of Saab Bahadar. He is portraying the titular role and has introduces us to a new brand of cop with his spellbinding performance. He enacts his character with earnestness and authenticity. He is brilliant in every frame and charges assertively through the film. His portrayal of Saab Bahadar stamps the fact that he is one of the most sought after actors of Punjabi film industry these days. Jaswinder Bhalla is superb as the vastu shastra obsessed cop. His one liners will surely bring the house down. Rana Ranbir gives a sincere performance. He provides the required comic relief in an otherwise serious mystery film.
Director Amrit Raj Chadha alongwith writers Jass Grewal and Gurpreet Singh Palheri make sure that all the detailing attached to the movie be authentic and adds incredible value to the project. Visually too, the frames capture the nervousness and uneasiness of the characters as well as the setting with aplomb (DOP – Sandeep Patil). The music (Jatinder Shah) is situational. The dialogues (Jatinder Lall) are taut and enthralling.
